Iran is digging up missiles and launchers amid the ceasefire, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on April 16, warning that the United States military is “locked and loaded” to finish the job.
“We are reloading with more power than ever before, and better intelligence, even more importantly, better intelligence than ever before,” Hegseth told a press briefing.
“You are digging out your remaining launchers and missiles with no ability to replace them. You can dig out for now. Can’t reconstitute, but we can,” he added, referring to Iran’s military leadership.
The choice facing Iran, Hegseth stated, was straightforward. “We prefer to do it the nice way, through a deal led by our great vice-president and negotiating team, or we can do it the hard way.”
Just a day earlier, The Telegraph reported, based on satellite images, that Iran is digging missiles and launchers from bases targeted during the war.
Trucks and heavy machinery were seen arriving at the ruins of missile bases near Khomeyn and Tabriz on April 10, according to the news outlet, which said that Iranian crews were seen to be clearing the debris from the underground tunnels, scooping the rubble and loading up nearby trucks that hulled it away.
The work appeared concentrated at the entrances to the bases that were hit and sealed off during the war, preventing Iran from gaining access to missiles and launchers stored there.
Around a week earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a U.S. intelligence assessment, that Iran still has thousands of ballistic missiles in its arsenal that it could use by retrieving launchers from underground tunnels. This goes directly against the claims made by the U.S. and Israel shortly after the start of the war, which suggested that most of the Islamic Republic’s missile arsenal was wiped out.
The ceasefire is set to end in under a week, but reports suggest that it could get extended to facilitate a second round of talks between the U.S. and Iran in Pakistan.
Still, the Islamic Republic is clearly preparing for a worst cease scenario, especially that the U.S. is sending thousands of additional troops to the Middle East.
