Over 10,000 more United States troops will reach the Middle East this month, The Washington Post reported on July 15, citing American officials.
There are 6,000 soldiers aboard the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier and its strike group, which is sailing around Africa on its way to the region. Another 4,200 troops are in the aircraft-carrying USS Boxer amphibious assault ship and its group, which is scheduled to reach the region at the end of April.
The Boxer group includes more than 800 marines, along with a number of helicopters and landing craft, according to the report.
When the USS George H.W. Bush arrives, it will join two other carrier groups — the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Gerald Ford — in the region, both of which participated in the fighting against Iran.
Two American officials told the outlet that planning continues for a range of ground operations in Iran, including landing special forces to take the Islamic Republic’s highly enriched uranium, and landings on islands and the coast around the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s two-week ceasefire with Iran ends within seven days, and while there are efforts to extend it, the Trump administration is yet to agree.
“There is continued engagement between the U.S. and Iran to reach a deal,” a senior American official tells Reuters.
The deployment of troops is not the only escalatory step taken by the Trump administration since the start of the ceasefire. Following a failed round of talks in Pakistan, the U.S. initiated a blockade on Iranian ports, justifying it as a response to the Islamic Republic’s measures on the Strait of Hormuz.
The recent developments mirror the situation before the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran, where the U.S. engaged in talks with the Islamic Republic all while preparing to attack.
Despite recent all the reports claiming progress in the diplomatic efforts, the Trump administration could end up resuming the war on Iran with ground operations.
