Hezbollah Releases Footage Of Missile Attack That Reportedly Hit British Warship

Hezbollah has released footage of the April 5 missile attack that reportedly hit a British warship in the eastern Mediterranean Sea by mistake.

At the time, the group announced that it had targeted a warship of the Israeli Navy with a cruise missile. It said that the warship was targeted as it was sailing 68 nautical miles off the coast of Lebanon, claiming that it was “preparing to launch attacks on Lebanese territory” and that “a direct hit was confirmed.”

Nevertheless, the Israeli military told AFP when contacted that it was “not aware” of any such attack by Hezbollah from Lebanon.

Israel’s Channel 14 News reported later on the same day that the “shore-to-sea missile” launched by Hezbollah targeted a British warship after mistaking it for an Israeli one.

The news channel said that the Israeli assessment indicated that “damage was caused” by the missile attack from Lebanon.

The footage released recently by Hezbollah confirmed that the group carried out the attack using an Iranian-made Noor anti-ship cruise missile, which is a reverse engineered Chinese C-802.

The Islamic Republic produces several versions of the Noor, with an average range of 120 kilometers, or around 125 nautical miles. The missile is equipped with an Inertial navigation system, and utilizes an active radar housing seeker in its terminal phase.

Following the Channel 14 News report, it was speculated by many analysts that Hezbollah’s missile hit HMS Dragon, a Royal Navy type-45 guided missile destroyer.

The warship was sent to the eastern Mediterranean to strengthen the two Royal Air Force bases on Cyprus, which were targeted with drones shortly after the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran more than a month ago.

British defense sources told The Telegraph that the warship was not attacked or struck. However, the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence announced on April 7 that HMS Dragon will be docked after experiencing a “minor technical issue.” The statement resparked speculations that the warship was indeed hit.

In any case, the latest attack confirmed that Hezbollah is still in position of anti-ship missiles, despite many reports suggesting that this capability was wiped out by Israel in the previous confrontation.
