Six unidentified drones targeted the Bazarkan oil field in the southern province of Maysan on April 4 evening, Shafaq News reported, citing an Iraqi security source.
The attack struck facilities operated by foreign companies within the field, the source told the news outlet, noting that the strike caused material damage but no casualties.
Bazarkan is one of the largest oil fields in Maysan. It is operated by a consortium of international and state-owned companies under a long-term contract with Iraq’s Missan Oil Company (MOC). Among the companies are China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and Türkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortaklığı (TPAO).
The American-Israeli war on Iran, which broke out more than a month ago, quickly spread to Iraq, with Iran-allied armed factions there, united under the umbrella group the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, launching retaliatory strikes against bases hosting U.S. forces, the American diplomatic mission in Baghdad and even energy facilities.
Nevertheless, the nationality of the companies operating at the Bazarkan oil field suggest that Iran’s allies were not behind the latest attack.
Notably, the attack took place as the Iranian military announced that Iraq will be exempted from shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway — where roughly 20% of the world’s oil production passes daily — has effectively been closed by Iranian fire since the start of the war.
“Brotherly Iraq is exempt from any restrictions we have imposed on the Strait of Hormuz,” Iran’s military spokesman said in an Arabic-language video statement published by state-run Islamic Republic News Agency.
Bloomberg News said that the declaration has the potential to unleash as much as three million barrels a day of Iraqi oil cargoes. An Iraqi official, however, cautioned that the usefulness of the exemption will depend on whether shipping companies are willing to risk entering the strait to collect cargoes.
The attack on the Bazarkan oil field may have been carried out in retaliation to the Iranian declaration, possibly to keep energy prices up.
