Drones, Rockets Hit U.S. Base In Syria In First Such Attack Since Start Of War On Iran

An attack targeted a base built by United States forces in the northeastern Syrian governorate of al-Hasakah on March 23, marking the first such attack on the country since the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a United Kingdom-based monitoring group, said that multiple drones, possibly launched from Iraq, targeted the base located next to the town of Khrab al-Jir in the northeastern al-Hasakah countryside. From its side, the Hawar News Agency said that at least six drones hit the base.

Meanwhile, Reuters, citing Iraqi security sources, reported that rockets launched from the vicinity of the city of Mosul in the western Iraqi governorate of al-Anbar hit the base.

The base, built by U.S. forces at the height of the war on ISIS, includes an airstrip, and is generally close to Rmelan, Syria’s largest oil field.

Earlier this month, it was reported that U.S. forces withdrew from the Rmelan base, with Syrian state media reporting that government forces were deployed there.

Reports by The Wall Street Journal and other outlets revealed last month that the U.S. is working to withdraw its remaining troops from Syria — numbered around 1,000 — within two months.

Prior to the withdrawal from Ramelan, U.S. troops left al-Tanf garrison, a key outpost near the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq, as well as a base near the town of al-Shadadi in al-Hasakah.

Despite the planned withdrawal, following the start of the war on Iran, the U.S. deployed air defenses — at least two Centurion C-RAM systems and an AN/TPQ-53 radar — at Qasrak base, located between the towns of Tell Tamr and Tell Baidar in the northeastern governorate of al-Hasakah.

Syrian state media reported just a few hours before the attack on Ramelan that security forces arrested a cell linked to the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in the eastern governorate of Deir Ezzor, which neighbors al-Hasakah.

The cell, made up of six people, was accused of collecting intelligence and smuggling weapons. However, activists said that a total of ten people, all Shia Muslims, were arrested from the town of Hatla in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, on sectarian grounds.

Countless reports from before and after the war on Iran speculated that the Syrian Transitional Government, led by Sunni Islamists, was going to take action against the allies of the Islamic Republic in Lebanon and Iraq. Despite official denial, this led to serious tensions.

The latest attack on Rmelan may have been carried out by the Iran-aligned Islamic Republic in Iraq, which includes many PMF factions, both in response to recent arrests in Deir Ezzor, as well as as a warning to the Syrian government against intervening in the ongoing war.
