Another salvo of ballistic missiles was launched from Iran at southern Israel late on March 21, with at least one hitting the city of Arad, where over 70 casualties were reported.
The missile was armed with a conventional explosive warhead weighing hundreds of kilograms, according to Hebrew media. It struck right between a number of multi-story apartment buildings, causing extensive damage and sparking a series of fires.
Israel’s Magen David Adom said that a total of 71 people were physically injured, including ten in serious condition, 13 in moderate condition, and 48 others lightly hurt. Another four were treated for acute anxiety and also taken to hospitals, according to the ambulance service.
Following the attack, the Israeli Air Force said that it is investigating the failure to intercept the ballistic missile. The Home Front Command of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) also launched an investigation into the circumstances of the impact.
The strike came right after a ballistic missile hit the city of Dimona, also located in southern Israel, wounding 47 people. In total, eight salvos were launched from Iran during the day, which marked the end of the third week of the American-Israeli war on Iran.
IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin stressed that the ballistic missiles that struck Dimona and Arad were not a new threat.
“The air defense systems operated but did not intercept the missile. We will investigate the incident and learn from it. This is not a special or unfamiliar type of munition,” he said in a post on X.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement on the “very difficult evening in the campaign for our future.”
The primer said that he spoke with the mayor of Arad after earlier talking with the mayor of Dimona, and called on government ministries “to provide all necessary assistance.”
“We will continue to strike our enemies on all fronts with determination,” he added.
Meanwhile, a commander from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that “any escalation by the enemy will be met with unprecedented tightening of measures in the Strait of Hormuz,” adding in a statement to Al Jazeera that all “options remain open.”
He also said that any attack on the Islamic Republic’s infrastructure will be met with “immediate and widespread destruction of vital infrastructure in the occupying entity.”
Israel’s multi-layered air defense network is clearly getting less effective, possibly as a result of depleted interceptor stockpiles and technical issues caused by around the clock operations. The possibility of damage from Iranian strikes can’t be also ruled out. The Islamic Republic will likely capitalize on this.
