American-Israeli strikes hit gas storage tanks at Iran’s South Pars field in the southern Iranian city of Asaluyeh on March 18, halting production at two refineries with a combined capacity of about 100 million cubic meters per day, Iranian media reported.
The South Pars field is the world’s largest natural gas reservoir, supplying approximately 70% of Iran’s domestic gas and holding nearly 8% of the world’s total reserves.
Loud explosions were heard across multiple refinery sites in Asaluyeh following the attack, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency, which said that several gas storage tanks and parts of the refinery infrastructure were targeted across different operational phases, including units three, four, five, and six.
The news agency added that employees were evacuated to safe areas, while firefighting and rescue teams were working to contain blazes triggered by the strike.
The attack took place right after Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Iran’s intelligence minister, Esmaeil Khatib, was killed in an Israeli strike in Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic, overnight, adding that “significant surprises” are to be expected later in the day.
APF, citing Israeli officials, reported that the South Pars field was targeted by the Israeli Air Force. This was confirmed by the Axios news website, which revealed that the attack was approved by the U.S.
Around the time the attack was reported, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: “I wonder what would happen if we ]finished off’ what’s left of the Iranian Terror State, and let the Countries that use it, we don’t, be responsible for the so called ‘Straight?’ That would get some of our non-responsive ‘Allies’ in gear, and fast!!!”
Iran’s state television later published a threat, saying that the Islamic Republic will be attacking oil and gas infrastructure in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The threats targeted Saudi Arabia’s Samref Refinery and its Jubail Petrochemical Complex. It also threatened the UAE’s Al Hasan Gas Field and the petrochemical plants and a refinery in Qatar.
Despite all the threats from Iran, Qatar condemned the attack on the South Pars field, calling it “dangerous and irresponsible.”
“The Israeli targeting of facilities linked to Iran’s South Pars field, an extension of Qatar’s North Field, is a dangerous & irresponsible step amid the current military escalation in the region,” said Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari on X.
“Targeting energy infrastructure constitutes a threat to global energy security, as well as to the peoples of the region & its environment,” he continues, calling on all sides not to target “vital facilities.”
The attack represents a major escalation in the war on Iran, which was started by the U.S. and Israel more than two weeks ago.
Iran will likely follow up with its threats, and Trump’s latest remarks indicate that this may be the main goal of the attack. Having failed to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz after threatening its main oil exporting hub, Kharg Island, then to form an international coalition to escort vessels going through the highway, the U.S. is now apparently trying to drag Gulf countries into the war.

“form an international coalition to escort vessels going through the highway”
oh, wait. if that “strategy” works out, the strait could be pushed open, but there won’t be any oil or gas to export through it.
