Hezbollah on March 17 released video footage showing its fighter launching a land-attack cruise missile and a heavy unguided artillery rocket at Israel, in another sign that the group’s advanced offensive capabilities were not completely wiped out as previously thought.
The group resumed attacks against Israel right after the start of the war on Iran, ending a ceasefire in Lebanon that was brokered by the United States more than 15 months ago.
The latest footage shows an attack from March 3 that targeted Palmachim Air Base, which is operated jointly by the Israeli Air Force and the Israel Space Agency. It is located west of the city of Yavne on the Mediterranean coast, 12 kilometers south of the Gush Dan metropolitan area with Tel Aviv, named after the Kibbutz Palmachim a few hundred meters to the north.
The land-attack cruise missile used by Hezbollah was clearly an Iranian-made Paveh, reported to have a range of 1,650 kilometers.
Paveh uses retractable wings on its body, and the engine of this cruise missile is also outside the body and is located on its upper part. It also has the ability to take different paths to reach the goal. That is, before reaching the target, it circulates to the required extent and attacks the target from another direction.
Hezbollah also fired a heavy unguided artillery rocket, most likely an Iranian-made Zelzal-2. Basic variants of the rocker have a maximum range of 130 or 210 kilometers, with a 600 kg warhead weight.
Multiple interception and impacts were reported in central Israel on March 3, and taking into account the strict censorship of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), it is hard to assess how much Hezbollah combined attack on Palmachim Air Base was successful.
It was widely assessed by the IDF and others that Hezbollah’s advanced offensive capabilities were degraded in a significant manner during the past confrontation — which broke out in October of 2023 with the war in the Gaza Strip, and ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in November of 2024.
However, the ongoing confrontation revealed that these assessments were not that accurate and that the group is still in possession of some very capable offensive weapons.
The IDF is now once again embarked on an operation, even with a “targeted” ground offensive in southern Lebanon, to degrade the capabilities of Hezbollah.
In fact, the military said on March 17 that it had struck an underground Hezbollah site in southern Lebanon, close to the town of Kafra, which was used by the group to store cruise missiles and hundreds of rockets. The strike took place a day earlier.
Israel appears to be more serious about its ongoing operation against Hezbollah, which is also under more pressure after losing its supply lines via neighboring Syria. Still, it is highly unlikely that the IDF will manage to degrade the capabilities of the group for the long term.
