Seven waves of Iranian missile attacks targeted Israel from the morning to the afternoon March 15, with Hebrew media reporting casualties and damage.
Many of the missiles launched by the Islamic Republic were armed with cluster warheads, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps even announced that it had used a Sejjil solid-fueled, multi-staged, medium range ballistic missile on one of the attacks.
Very little is known about the Sejjil, but the missile is reported to have a range from 2,000 to 2,500 kilometers, with a warhead weighing between 500 and 1,500 kilograms.
The missiles set off warning sirens across central Israel, and while the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced successful interceptions, multiple impacts were recorded, with Hebrew media reporting, citing the Magen David Adom ambulance service, that at least seven people were wounded.
Amid the attacks, the Israeli Health Ministry reported that in the past 24 hours, 108 wounded people have been taken to hospitals as a result of the war with Iran.
The ministry also said that since the start of the war with the Islamic Republic on February 28, 3,195 people have been admitted to hospitals, 81 of whom are currently hospitalized. Although not much details were given, the number includes both civilians and soldiers.
A day earlier, Semafor reported, citing American officials familiar with the matter, that Israel informed the United States this week that it is running “critically low” on ballistic missile interceptors.
The report said that the Americans have been aware for months that Israel has a low capacity, adding that the U.S. is not running low on interceptors of its own.
Additionally, the report claimed that Iran’s launch of missiles armed with cluster warheads “may exacerbate the depletion of the stock,” despite Israel’s use of shorter-range air defense systems like the Iron Dome and David’s Sling to shoot down the individual submunitions, rather than an anti-ballistic missile system.
While Iran is still introducing new types of missiles, the rate of fire appears to be steady. Israel’s multi-layered air defense network is, however, coming under increasing pressure, not just from the Islamic Republic, but also from Hezbollah in Lebanon which joined the war early on.
The IDF has already denied that it is running low on interceptions, according to The Times of Israel, but the readiness of the network as a whole could fall as the war drags on, even if there are sufficient stockpiles of interceptors. Technical problems will increase, and the need for maintenance will take some critical systems out of service for periods of time.
