An Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jet was almost shot down over Iran amid the war, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on March 14.
An attempt was made to shoot down the fighter jet, and it was “close to being hit,” the military said in a statement, adding that the attempt “failed due to the alertness and professionalism of the pilot,” and that the sortie “was completed successfully.”
The IDF further noted that the incident was investigated by the IAF, and said that lessons were learned. It did not, however, reveal the type of the fighter jet involved in the incident.
Since the start of the war on Iran, Israel has kept its military losses under warps, with the IDF censorship tightening its restrictions.
This was the second time, however, the IDF has acknowledged that an IAF fighter jet came under fire over the Islamic Republic.
On March 3, early on in the war, the military released video footage showing an IAF fighter jet pilot evading an Iranian anti-aircraft missile during operations over Iran.
“There’s another launch, heading above the clouds,” the pilot can be heard saying over the radio in the video.
The IDF said that the jet had been conducting strikes in the Iranian capital, Tehran, when it came under fire. While the military didn’t reveal the type of the fighter jet at the time, a glimpse of the cockpit seen in the footage suggest that it is an F-16.
So far, Israeli aerial losses confirmed by visual evidence include 15 combat drones: eight Hermes 900, four Heron 1 Machatz, and three IAI Eitan.
These drones were all shot down using short-range air defense systems, which survived the opening strikes of the American-Israeli war. Such systems are, however, incapable of engaging fighter jets in most cases.
The latest incident indicates that Iran is working to restore its medium and long-range air defense systems, and as the war drags on, these systems will likely become a threat again, especially if the Islamic Republic manages to secure support from some side with such capabilities.
