UAE Largest Refinery Shut Down After Iranian Strike, More Damage Spotted At U.S. Base There (Photos)

The United Arab Emirate’s energy giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) was forced on March 10 to shut down its Ruwais refinery in response to ‌a fire sparked by a drone strike, Reuters reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

The refinery is the largest in the UAE, with a processing capacity of approximately 922,000 barrels per day. It also serves as the central hub for the emirate’s downstream operations, including significant chemical, fertilizer and industrial gas plants.

The source who spoke to Reuters said that the refinery was shut as a precautionary measure, noting that all other operations at the complex were continuing normally.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s government media office confirmed in a statement that authorities responded to a fire at a facility after a drone attack, adding there were no injuries. It did not identify the facility, however.

The country’s defense ministry said in a statement released around the same time the refinery was shut down that air defenses detected nine ballistic missiles, of which eight were destroyed, while one missile fell into the sea. It added that a total of 35 drones were also detected, with 26 intercepted, while nine fell within the country’s territory.

The ADNOC refinery is located at Ruwais Industrial City in Al Dhafra region, approximately 240 kilometers to the west of the Emirate capital, Abu Dhabi.

The UAE has taken the brunt of Iranian retaliatory attacks since the start of the American-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, getting targeted with missiles and drones on a daily basis.

In addition to the refinery, Al Dhafra is home to a large air base where forces from the United States are known to be deployed.

The air base came under attack more than once in recent days, and on March 10 Persian media shared satellite images showing more damage at the air base. The images confirm that more hangars were hit, in addition to fuel tanks.

An additional satellite image released by China’s MizarVision also confirmed damage at another military site near Abu Dhabi that houses and Emirate American-made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system. The AN/TPY-2 long-range radar of the system, which costs upwards of $500 millions on its own, appear to have been destroyed.

The attacks on the UAE have so far claimed the lives of 12 people, including two military pilots whose helicopter crashed while on a combat mission to hunt down drones launched from Iran.

Several recent reports suggested that the UAE could soon join the war on Iran, and while the latest attack on Ruwais refinery was a big blow, Abu Dhabi will not likely take such a step as this would cause the Islamic Republic to further escalate its attacks.
