The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on March 7 that it destroyed 16 aircraft used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force at Mehrabad International Airport near Tehran in a wave of airstrikes in Iran’s capital last night.
Quds Force is the extraterritorial branch of the IRGC, specialized in unconventional warfare and military intelligence operations. The force has been one of the prime targets of the United States and Israel since the start of the war on Iran a week earlier.
In a statement, the IDF said that Mehrabad Airport was used by the Quds Force “as a central hub for arming and funding the regime’s terrorist proxies in the Middle East,” including Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
“Aircraft loaded with weapons and cash took off from the airport numerous times and landed across the region for the use of the Iranian terror regime’s proxies,” the military said.
The strikes destroyed 16 aircraft that had been used to transfer weapons to Hezbollah, other military infrastructure at the airport, as well as several Iranian fighter jets, which the IDF said “posed a threat to Israeli Air Force aircraft operating in Iranian airspace.”
Mehrabad includes the 1st Tactical Air Base, which hosts some of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) most important squadrons.
The IRIAF tanker squadron’s last KC-747, a military tanker variant of the Boeing 747-100, was reportedly destroyed in the Israeli strikes. It is also highly likely that the 11 Tactical Fighter Squadron, which operates Soviet-made MiG-29 fighter jets, took losses.
In addition to Mehrabad International Airport, recent Israeli strikes on Tehran targeted a key command center of the IRGC, according to the IDF.
The command center served the IRGC air force’s air defense unit, “whose purpose is to create an aerial picture and defend Iran’s skies,” the military said, describing the center as “the most central air defense operations room of the IRGC air force.”
The IDF added that it also struck Iranian air defense systems, headquarters, logistical warehouses, and other buildings near the command center. In addition, as a part of the wave of strikes, a ballistic missile production and launch site, which also included a weapons depot of the IRGC Quds Force were hit.
Despite increasing pressure from the U.S. and Israel, Iran launched more missile attacks overnight. Warning sirens have sounded at least seven times in Tel Aviv and its surroundings in central Israel since midnight as a result of several waves of missile attacks.
The IDF said that missiles were intercepted, but impacts were reported. Hebrew media didn’t report any casualties. Later, the IRGC announced that it attacked targets across Israel in Wave 26 of Operation True Promise using Emad, Ghadr, and Kheibar ballistic missiles.
The Israeli strikes on Mehrabad International Airport may be a sign that the IDF can no longer identify enough military targets in Iran to attack. Meanwhile, the latest missile attacks that targeted Israel indicate that the Islamic Republic has not yet lost its offensive capabilities.
The war will likely go on for weeks to come, if not more. The U.S. and Israel have more firepower, but Iran has been causing as much damage with its missiles and drones.
