The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) on March 6 released video footage showing an attack on IRIS Shahid Bagheri, a drone carrier operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy.
Originally a South Korean-built container ship named Perarin, the vessel was converted between 2022 and 2024 and officially commissioned last year. The 240-meter-long vessel had a displacement of 42,000 tons, and featured a 180-meter angled flight deck with a ski-jump ram.
The video released by CENTCOM shows two large blasts rocking the flight deck and the bridge of the vessel, possible as a result of guided bombs, not anti-ship cruise missiles.
Just a day earlier, CENTCOM Admiral Brad Cooper announced that more than 30 Iranian warships have been sunk since the start of the U.S. and Israel’s war against the Islamic Republic, including an “Iranian drone ship” that is on fire. He was most likely referring to IRIS Shahid Bagheri.
Among the warships confirmed hit is the IRIS Makran, a crude oil tanker with a displacement of 121,000 tons that was converted into forward base ship in 2020, and entered service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy the following year. It was Iran’s largest warship.
IRIS Kurdistan, the smaller sister ship of IRIS Makran, was also reportedly sunk. The vessel, which had a displacement of just 45,500 tons was also a crude oil tanker before. It was converted into a forward base ship and entered service with the navy just last year.
Despite recent losses, Iran’s naval forces are still conducting naval operations, targeting the U.S. Navy and keeping pressure at the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
On March 5, Khatam Al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier was attacked with drones.
“The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which had approached 340 kilometers from Iran’s maritime borders in the Sea of Oman in a bid to manage the Strait of Hormuz, was hit by drones of the Iranian Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Navy,” a spokesman for the military headquarters said.
The spokesperson added the aircraft carrier rapidly fled with its destroyers, and is now thousand kilometers away from the region.
Th Islamic Republic has also struck at least nine tankers close to the Strait of Hormuz, and deeper into the Persian Gulf, since the start of the war.
A Bahamas-flagged crude oil tanker was targeted by an Iranian drone boat laden with explosives while anchored near Iraq’s Khor al Zubair port on March 5. On the same day, it was reported that a second tanker at anchor off Kuwait was taking on water and spilling oil after a large explosion on its port side.
The latest Iranian attack brought movement through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil export routes, to a near halt. Thus, despite taking heavy losses, Iranian naval forces are very much fulfilling their main task.

the us attacks easy targets a brags. these iranian drone carriers are converted from cargo ships and are big, easy targets. the us uses advanced submarines to attack iranian frigates in international waters returning home from exercises with friendly nations. low hanging fruit and easy targets. just like the ayotollah was at home in his residence and not hiding, easy targets. nothing to brag about.
