Iran fired two missiles towards Cyprus, where thousands of British soldiers are stationed, John Healey, the Defence Secretary of the United Kingdom, said on March 1, adding that Iranian strikes also landed within just “a few hundred yards” of British troops in Bahrain.
“Yesterday, we had 300 personnel on that Bahrain base that was attacked by Iranian missiles and drones, some of them within a few hundred yards of where they landed,” Healey told Sky News.
“We had two missiles fired in the direction of Cyprus,” the secretary continued.
“We don’t believe they were targeted at Cyprus, but nevertheless, it’s an example of how there is a very real and rising threat from a regime that is lashing out widely across the region, and that requires us to act,” he added.
Iran has so far launched dozens of missiles and drones at Bahrain in response to the attack carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28.
The U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain was devastated by Iranian missile and drone strikes. The base, located near Manama, is home to the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and Fifth Fleet. A large radar dome was destroyed by one of the strikes.
In addition to the base, several high-rise buildings in Manama, and the city of Muharraq had been targeted by drones and missiles. Bahrain International Airport near the capital was also struck.
Notably, the videos that came out from Bahrain, shows people cheering and celebrating as Iranian missiles and drones hit their targets. This is not surprising, however. Just like Iran, the majority of the population in Bahrain are from the Shia Muslim sect.
In 2011, the Bahraini government crushed a Shia uprising in the country with help from Saudi Arabia and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). At the time it accused Iran of intervening in its internal affairs.
Two years later, an armed group dubbed al-Ashtar Brigades surfaced in Bahrain. The group, which was widely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, carried out drone strikes against Israel after the outbreak of the war in Gaza. It is thought, however, that the strikes were launched from Iraqi territories, not from Bahrain.
The latest Iranian strikes have clearly emboldened Shia in Bahrain once again, and taking into account the recent assassination of Ali Khamenei — widely considered a spiritual leader for Shia around the world —, a new uprising could start in the country soon.
With strong support from the GCC, the U.S. and the UK, the Bahraini government will likely crack down with full force on any such move.
Separately, the UK’s latest accusations are likely meant to justify using Bahrain, as well as Cyprus, as forward bases for operations against Iran. The Royal Air Force brought in additional assets to the region before the start of the American-Israel attack, and it won’t be surprising if it joins very soon.
