The Mi-28NE attack helicopters delivered by Russia to Iran last month appear to be equipped with the advanced L370V28 Vitebsk self-defense suite self-defense suite, or more likely an export version of it.
The components of the self-defense suite were spotted in a close up photo of one of the helicopters, taken at the Pars Aerospace Services Company based at Mehrabad International Airport near Tehran. The photo surfaced online on February 12.
The suit combines L150-28M radar, L-140M laser, and L370-2 ultra-violet warning receivers, a countermeasures-launching system, an L370V28-5L laser-based directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) system, and UV-26 flares and chaffs dispensers.
The L150-28M receivers are installed on the nose of the Mi-28, while the L-140M and L370-2 receivers are installed on the wingtips, along with the UV-26 dispensers. The L370V28-5L is installed under the belly of the helicopter.
The receivers provide early warning from incoming missiles. The DIRCM is then activated and flares are deployed to jam heat-seeking missiles. Chaffs can also be deployed to attempt to jam radar-guided missiles.
The Vitebsk — also installed on Ka-52 and Mi-35 attack helicopters, as well as on Su-25 close air support jets — proved to be highly effective during Russian counter-terrorism operations in Syria, and later during the special military operation in Ukraine, especially against man-portable air defense systems. The Iranian Mi-28s are likely equipped with the export version of the system, the President-S, which was sold to Egypt before.
With a maximum speed of 324 kilometers per hour, the Mi-28NE is one of the fastest attack helicopters in the world. It has a combat range of 200 kilometers.
In addition to the self-defense suit, the Iranian helicopters came equipped with a mast-mounted millimeter-wave radar system, most likely the N025NE which has a range of 10 to 20 kilometers.

The delivery of the helicopters was not announced by the Iranian Ministry of Defense, nor by the manufacturer, Russian Helicopters.
It is rumored however that Iran has received a first batch of at least six helicopters. However, there is a good chance that not all of them are from the Mi-28NE version. Some may be from the Mi-28UB combat training version, which is equipped with a dual-control system allowing operation from both the pilot and instructor cockpits.
The delivery comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. Since last month, President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened the Islamic Republic with military action over a wave of violent protests. While talks between the two sides have begun, the U.S. military is clearly preparing for war.
During the 12-day June war with Israel last year, Iran reportedly attempted to use its aging AH-1Js — delivered by the U.S. all the way back in the 1970s — to intercept Israeli drones.
The Mi-28NE, armed with Igla-V and R-73 anti-aircraft missiles, in addition to its chin-mounted 30 mm gun, can be a lethal drone-hunter, especially with the inclusion of the N025NE radar.
