Russia’s state tech corporation Rostec announced on February 11 that it has delivered a new batch of BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles with enhanced protection kits to the Russian military.
“The High-Precision Systems holding company of the Rostec state corporation has delivered a batch of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles to the Russian Defense Ministry. The January delivery volume surpassed the planned figures by 40%. The vehicles received a number of modifications that enhanced their effectiveness and protection,” the corporation said in a press release.
The BMP-3, which weighs under 19 tons, is armed with a 2A70 100 mm low-pressure rifled cannon capable of launching laser-guided shells, in addition to a 2A72 300 autocannon and three PKT 7.62 mm machine guns.
The vehicle, which can carry seven fully-equipped troops in addition to its driver, gunner and commander, is powered by a UTD-29M diesel with 500 horsepower. It can reach speeds up to 72 kilometers per hour on road, and 45 kilometers per hour off road, with an average operational range of 600 kilometers.
Rostec noted that the newly delivered BMP-3s differ significantly from the vehicles delivered before the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.
Over the past four years, dozens of design changes have been implemented. These include additional protection, like side skirts, grilles, upper hemisphere protection sets, and stealth systems, as well as specialized instruments and equipment that enhance the vehicle’s mobility and weapon performance.
“The equipment continues to be continuously modernized and improved based on combat experience,” Rostec said.
It is unclear how many BMP-3s are currently in service with the Russian military. Before the start of the special military operation in Ukraine, more than 2,000 were produced, with nearly half delivered to the military. Since the start of the operation, the average yearly production has been reportedly around 500 vehicles.
