Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader Muamamr Gaddafi, was reportedly shot and killed inside his residency the country on February 3,
Al Arabiya reported that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s assassination was carried out by four people who quickly fled the scene after shooting him in the garden of his house in the western Libyan city of Zintan.
Other sources said that the son of the former Libyan leader was killed in a clash with the 444th Brigade, a prominent Tripoli-based militia,
Abdullah Osman, as an adviser and chief of cabinet to Saif al-Islam, reportedly confirmed the death of Saif al-Islam following an armed confrontation with a militia, according to Turkish conflict zone journalist Levent Kemal. The 444th Brigade, however, denied involvement in the alleged killing.
The 444th Brigade, led by Mahmoud Hamza, is aligned with the United Nation-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) under Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. In May of last year, the militia was involved in deadly clashes in Tripoli triggered by the killing of Stability Support Authority leader Abdelghani al-Kikli.
Saif al-Islam was the second son of Gaddafi, who ruled Libya from 1969 until his overthrow and death in a rebellion backed by NATO in 2011.
Educated at the London School of Economics, he positioned himself as a reformist in his father’s regime and was widely seen by many inside and outside the country as a potential successor.
In 2011, shortly after the death of Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam was captured by rebels in southern Libya. He was sentenced to death in 2015 by a court in Tripoli for crimes during the civil war, in a widely criticized trial conducted in absentia. He remained in the custody of the de facto independent authorities of Zintan. In 2017, he was released from prison in Zintan. Soon after, his full amnesty was declared by the Tobruk-based government led by Khalifa Haftar.
After his release, Saif al-Islam began working on a political comeback from hiding, even announcing a presidential run in 2021.
Supporters view him as the only figure who could unify Libya once again, while critics linked him to the former regime’s abuses.
Up until he was killed, Saif al-Islam was wanted by the International Criminal Court for charges of crimes against humanity against the Libyan people, for killing and persecuting civilians.
Al-Saadi, another son of Gaddafi, was also imprisoned in Libya over alleged crimes after the fall of their father’s regime, only to be declared innocent and released later. He is said to be living in Turkey.
Last year, their brother Hannibal was also released from prison in Lebanon after spending a decade in pre-trial detention in a case related to the kidnapping and disappearance of revered Lebanese Shia leader Musa al-Sadr in Libya.
Other sons of Gaddafi were not as lucky, however. Mutassim, Saif al-Arab and Khamis were all killed by NATO or rebels backed by the alliance.
Only one son of the late Libyan leader, Mohammed, and his daughter, Ayesha, have avoided getting arrested or killed. Both fled early on in the war to Algeria and are believed to be living in Oman.
The killing of Saif al-Islam shows that the chaos and division that descended upon Libya as a result of the NATO intervention are still prevailing. The assassination could have serious ramification not just for political reasons, but also for tribal ones. It could cause some instability in the areas controlled by the GNU in western Libya.
