U.S. Mulls Full Withdrawal From Syria As It Abandons Kurds

The United States is considering a complete withdrawal of American troops from Syria, The Wall Street Journal reported on January 22, citing U.S. officials.

Syria’s Islamist-led government attacked the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the U.S., in the north and east of the country over the last week, taking over much of its territories, including oil and gas fields once held by American troops and facilities with ISIS detainees.

The U.S. pushed for the SDF to merge into the government and sponsored talks between two sides, which resulted in several shaky agreements, the last of which, announced on January 20, included a four-day ceasefire.

Commenting on the latest agreement, U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barraсk said that the purpose of the SDF had “expired.” This was a sign that the U.S. was willing to abandon the Kurds.

“Today, the situation has fundamentally changed. Syria now has an acknowledged central government that has joined the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS (as its 90th member in late 2025), signaling a westward pivot and cooperation with the US on counterterrorism. This shifts the rationale for the US-SDF partnership: the original purpose of the SDF as the primary anti-ISIS force on the ground has largely expired, as Damascus is now both willing and positioned to take over security responsibilities, including control of ISIS detention facilities and camps,” he said in a lengthy post on X.

A withdrawal would end the U.S. alliance with the SDF, which began more than a decade ago with the aim of fighting ISIS in Syria.

The U.S. currently have around 1,000 troops in Syria, scattered across small bases in the northeastern governorate of al-Hasakah, where Kurdish forces are also deployed, and a garrison in the area of al-Tanf in the southern governorate of Rif Dimashq.

Last year, the Pentagon announced plans for a partial withdrawal from Syria. Following that, it was reported that the U.S. is considering taking over an air base close to the capital, Damascus, as the country’s government moved to join the anti-ISIS coalition.

Nevertheless, the government’s latest attack on the SDF led the Pentagon to question the viability of the military deployment in the country.

If the SDF fully disbands, the U.S. officials see no reason for the American military to stay deployed in Syria, , according to WSJ.

One factor is the difficulties posed by working with Syrian government forces, which are riddled with jihadist sympathizers, including soldiers with ties to al-Qaeda and ISIS and others who have been involved in alleged war crimes against the Kurds and Druze, two of the officials told the journal.

This threat materialized in December when two U.S. soldiers and an American civilian interpreter were killed during an attack near the city of Palmyra. The attacker was a radical member of the Syrian security forces.

WSJ revealed that Syrian government forces came dangerously close to U.S. troops during the attack on the SDF over the last week.

U.S. forces shot down at least one Syrian government drone near a facility where American troops are stationed, according to two of the U.S. officials. One of them even revealed that within the same 24 hours, government forces attacked a barracks of the SDF at the base.

Another sign of near complete U.S. withdrawal from Syria is the decision to move 7,000 out of a total 9,000 ISIS detainees from SDF-run facilities to Iraq that was announced by the Central Command on January 21. Government forces freed around 200 such detainees from a facility in al-Hasakah during their attack on the Kurds.

A U.S. withdrawal would of course leave the SDF completely exposed to the Syrian government, which would very much end the existence of the group still holding up in al-Hasakah and around the town of Kobani in the northern governorate of Aleppo.

With Washington’s clear lack of interest in applying any pressure on the Syrian government to protect the Kurds, a full U.S. withdrawal following by the collapse of the SDF seems the most likely outcome.

we heard for over 15 years how the assad regime was evil and assad was a “butcher” yet they installed a saudi born, isis linked head-chopper as president. and terrorized, ethno-cleansed, and destroyed a whole country for it. the whole affair of the us and israel being champions of human rights is absolutely laughable and disgusting!!

the real reason: the kurds, at the request of the yankees, did not want to participate in the recent riots in iran.
