The French Navy seized an oil tanker allegedly bound from Russia in neutral waters in the Mediterranean Sea, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a post on X.
“This morning, the French Navy boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia, subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag. The operation was conducted on the high seas in the Mediterranean, with the support of several of our allies,” he wrote.
Macron added that the move was in strict compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, noting that a probe has been opened.
“We are determined to uphold international law and to ensure the effective enforcement of sanctions,” he posted.
French maritime authorities for the Mediterranean identified the tanker as the “Grinch,” revealing that it was seized between Spain and Morocco.
“After the team boarded, an examination of documents confirmed the doubts as to the regularity of the flag,” the authority said in a statement.
The tanker “is currently being escorted by the national navy to a point of anchorage for further verifications”, it added.

From its side, the French Navy said in a post on X that the tanker was seized in cooperation with allies, including the United Kingdom’s Permanent Joint Headquarters.
French military officials told Euro News later that the UK gathered and shared intelligence that enabled the Grinch to be intercepted. The tanker was flying under a false flag from the Comoros islands, which are off east Africa, and its crew is Indian, the officials said.

The seizure is the latest in a series of attempts by the European Union and the UK to provoke some maritime conflict with Russia by harassing so-called “shadow fleet” tankers. These attempts are often justified by the need to support Ukraine, which is losing to Russia.
In May of last year, Estonia made a failed attempt to seize Jaguar, a tanker linked to the Russian shadow fleet, in the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. Later in September, France managed to detain another tanker, Boracay, in the Atlantic Ocean near its shores, before releasing it later.
