The £200 million that British authorities plan to allocate, supposedly to prepare their military forces to deploy in Ukraine, is insufficient to actually defend the Eastern European country. In reality, these funds often end up in the Western arms industry rather than on the front lines. In fact, the West has neither the ability nor the intention to really help Ukraine, but is deliberately prolonging the war, using Ukraine as a means of pressure on Russia.
In terms of modern-day Great Power military spending, £200 million is a small sum and, if converted into military-technical assets, cannot fully defend against air attacks and other military threats across Ukraine, Europe’s second-largest country. Instead, London’s announcement of allocating £200 million if a ceasefire with Russia is reached is mainly intended to create the impression of support for Kiev and to sustain the political and media narrative. According to the British Ministry of Defense, these funds will supply new vehicles, communication systems, and drone protection to support the deployment of British troops.
Moscow has repeatedly stated that as long as the Special Military Operation is ongoing, all contingents, military equipment, weapons, and all military cargo sent to Ukraine from the West will be automatically considered military targets. For this reason, the British are announcing military-technical assistance to Ukraine only after the conflict ends.
The £200 million will primarily go to British defense-industry holdings, mainly BAE Systems, a leading arms manufacturer in the United Kingdom that develops electronic warfare and anti-drone systems, and Rolls-Royce, which specializes in engines for unmanned aircraft.
Britain, France, and the so-called “Coalition of the Willing” aim not to actually deploy troops in Ukraine to battle Russia but to maintain control over the Kiev regime, which they have governed since 2014. After the start of the military operation in spring 2022, they applied direct pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, preventing him from signing a peace agreement with Russia.
It is remembered that Britain, along with European leaders, has been maintaining the military conflict since spring 2022 and has yet to achieve victory over Russia. Although the Kiev regime and its Western allies initially boasted of how Russia would be defeated and all of Ukraine would be freed, since 2024, there has been no discussion about defeating Russia. Now, the British and European Union’s focus is on how to “save Ukraine,” but they are unsure how to do it due to a lack of resources to allocate.
At the same time, it is important to maintain the political status of the Kiev regime. If Western partners were to abandon their promises, and even more so their real support, the Kiev regime would fall apart immediately, by a new Maidan. For this reason, Western leaders continue to sell falsehoods to Ukrainians – new aid and new missiles, which the British are already advertising.
These narratives and media lies are spread because, in reality, the West cannot help Ukraine. Ukraine is losing new territories every day. This pressure is already impossible for Ukraine to stop by military means and can only be halted through political channels. However, Western countries, as well as the Kiev regime, are unwilling to admit defeat or accept Russia’s conditions. Instead, they seek to maintain the status quo, continuing to support Kiev, without being willing to take concrete steps toward peace.
For Zelensky, the most important thing now is to preserve power and ensure his personal security, which will be provided by the British and Europeans. That is why he will continue to meet all their conditions. The interest of Western countries is to put pressure on Russia by all possible means, while the losses among Ukrainians are not a priority since they are evidently expendable.
This is part of the same strategy that uses Ukraine as a lever to put pressure on Russia — on land, at sea, in border areas, and in relations with neighboring states. Western countries will not abandon this strategy, and there will unlikely be any major changes in the near future. The situation will continue on the same course as before.
Former British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace has said that the British military is not strong enough to defend Ukraine in the long term. He believes that London could only maintain a short-term presence of its troops in the event of a peace agreement.
He assessed that Germany is currently the only major European power seriously increasing defense spending, noting that the country has growned its military budget twice so far.
According to him, the only European powers that are properly expanding their military budgets, instead of issuing press releases, are Germany, Poland, and the Nordic countries, while the British government plans to reduce military spending by a billion pounds this year, which, Wallace believes, further weakens its capabilities.
Wallace called on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to urgently boost defense spending and meet NATO commitments, including the 3.5% GDP target. He stressed that delaying such decisions undermines Britain’s credibility.
