On December 5, the Russian military’s Yug [South] Group of Forces broke through a key Ukrainian defense line within the city of the Siversk in Donetsk.
The line, which includes strong fortifications, lies along the eastern part of Siversk. After breaking through the line, Russian troops managed to expand their control in the eastern part of the city, even reaching the multi-story residential area on Energetikov Street which oversees all nearby areas.
Following the breakthrough, some Ukrainian news sources began to sound the alarm over the catastrophic situation in Siversk.
Ukrainian troops held up in the city lost their last main supply route a few days earlier when the Yug Group of Forces stormed Sviato-Pokrovske to the south and cut the T-05-13 road. The city is not besieged yet, but bringing in supplies is getting harder by the day.
To the northwest of Siversk, Kiev forces are also losing ground to the Yug Group of Forces, mainly along the Siverskyi Donets River.
Russian troops are mainly working to secure the right bank of the river between Platonivka and Yampil to the north. Both settlements are already under control, and recent reports indicate that an area with a size of more than 7,6 square kilometers between them has been secured.
On the left bank of the river, the troops are reported to be advancing towards two key settlements, Ozerne, which is also known as Ilyichevka, and Zakatnoe, where a strategic highway is located. Kiev forces will attempt to hold onto these settlements to the end in order to maintain a presence on the road linking Siversk with the city of Krasny Liman to the north.
As it stands, the battle in Siversk could end within a few weeks with a victory for the Russian military. Ukraine clearly lacks the resources to organize any meaningful counterattack in this direction.
The Ukrainian collapse taking place in Sivers is only one of many. Kiev has already lost the city of Pokrovsk, which is also located in Donetsk, and the cities of Kupyansk and Vovchansk in Kharkiv. Meanwhile in Zaporozhye, an even more catastrophic situation is developing in the city of Hulyaipole which could get captured soon. Despite all of these problems, Kiev seems unwilling to make any changes in military or political strategies. It just continues to repeat the same actions and words.
