The Iranian military has received a batch of newly-built Sevom Khordad medium-range air defense systems, in what may be the first such delivery since the end of the 12-day war with Israel last June.
The Israeli Republic didn’t announce the delivery, but it became known when a video showing three Sevom Khordad transporter erector launcher and radar (TELAR) vehicles moving on a highway to the west of the capital, Tehran, surfaced online on November 30. All the vehicles were painted in a green pattern not seen before.
While the Sevom Khordad was developed in Iran, its design resembles that of the Soviet-era Buk family of medium-range air defense systems.
The system’s TELAR is reported to be equipped with an X-band active phased array engagement radar that can simultaneously detect 100 aerial targets, engage four and guide two missiles towards a target.
The main armament of the Sevom Khordad is the Taer-2B radar-guided missile, which has a range of 50 kilometers and top altitude of 25-27 kilometers. The system can also launch a more capable radar-guided missile, the Sayyad-2C, which has a range of 75 kilometers and a top altitude of 30 kilometers.
It’s worth noting that Iranian media claims that both missiles are equipped with active radar homing seekers. This has not been verified yet.
The Sevom Khordad can be only armed with three Taer-2B or Sayyad-2C, but Iran has already developed a smaller missile dubbed “Dey 9,” which is reported to have a range of around 30 kilometers. The system can be armed with up to eight such missiles in two separate pods. There is still no clear information on the guidance system of this missile.
Each battery of the Sevom Khordad consists of one TELAR and two transporter erector launchers (TEL), which are not equipped with a radar. Meanwhile, each battalion has four batteries. According to this, a battalion can engage up to 16 targets simultaneously with Taer-2B or Sayyad-2C missiles.
Each battalion also includes a Bashir 3D S-band phased array surveillance radar which has a detection range of up to 350 kilometers.
The Israeli military claims to have destroyed over 80 air defense systems during the war with Iran. The air defenses were not only targeted from the air, but also from ground by commando units deployed by the Israeli Mossad intelligence agency. The losses included multiple Sevom Khordad systems.
Since the end of the war, several reports suggested that Iran is working to rebuild its air defenses with help from both China and Russia. However, the latest delivery represents the only open-source evidence of the Islamic Republic receiving new air defenses, and they are all made locally.
