The Iranian military has shared videos showing its air defense operators fighting to death during the 12-day war with Israel last June.
The never-before-seen videos were shown during an interview with Brig. Gen. Reza Khajeh, Deputy for Operations of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Defense Force, that was aired by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on November 28.
Air defenses were targeted in western and central Iran in the very first moments of Israel’s attack on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program on June 13. The air defenses were not only targeted from the air, but also from ground by commando units deployed by the Israeli Mossad intelligence agency.
One of the videos shared by IRIB shows an Iranian-made Najm-804 active electronically scanned array radar getting hit. Only one of the operators appeared to have survived the Israeli strike. The Najm-804, which is reported to have a range of 150-250 kilometers, is affiliated with different Iranian-made medium and long-range air defense systems.
Another video shows air defense operators struggling to fix their equipment, which were apparently hit by a malfunction or a cyber attack, at a base near the city of Tabriz in western Iran amid intense Israeli strikes. Eventually, the room they were in was hit. Both this attack and the strike on the Najm-804 radar took place on the first day of the war.
Brig. Gen. Khajeh claimed in the interview that despite these losses and many others Iranian air defenses shot down 196 aircraft of different types during the war.
A video showing a Majid short-range air defense system, which can engage targets within a range of six kilometers, taking down an Israeli IAI Eitan reconnaissance drone was shown during the interview.
The Israeli military claims to have destroyed over 80 air defense systems during the war with Iran. It is unclear how many of them were targeted by Mossad commandos.
Since the end of the war on June 24, multiple reports suggested that the Islamic Republic was working to rebuild its air defenses with help from both China and Russia. Still, there is no evidence confirming that any new air defense systems were shipped to the country.
