Senior United States military officials on November 13 presented President Donald Trump with updated options for potential operations in Venezuela, including strikes on land, CBS News reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the meetings at the White House.

The options were presented by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine and other senior officials.

The U.S. intelligence community assisted in providing information for potential operations against Venezuela, according to the report.

No final decision was made by Trump, however, two of the sources told CBS News, without providing details on any of the operations.

The report came after the Pentagon confirmed earlier in the week that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group began operating in the area of responsibility of the Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which includes the Caribbean Sea.

The Ford joined an amphibious ready group led by the USS Iwo Jima landing helicopter dock that was deployed to the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility in August. In the same month, doubled the reward for the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to $50 million on drug trafficking charges. Later in September, the U.S. military began launching strikes against boats allegedly carrying drugs in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific Ocean.

According to CBS News, the U.S. has so far targeted 21 alleged drug boats in both areas, killing at least 80 alleged smugglers.

Earlier this month, Trump was presented with multiple military options for Venezuela, including targeting Maduro himself and occupying the country’s oil fields, according to a report from The New York Times.

As a part of its preparation for an attack by the U.S., the Venezuelan government announced earlier this week that it was launching a “massive mobilization” of military personnel, weapons and equipment.

Any U.S. attack on Venezuela will likely be aimed to topple Maduro in a way or another, with the ultimate aim of tapping into the country’s oil reserves, which are the largest in the world. Trump hesitation in making a decision likely stems from fear of a catastrophic failure, or even legal challenges within the U.S. itself. In any case, dragging this situation any more won’t be in favor of the U.S.
