The United States and Israel foiled an Iranian plot to kill the latter’s ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Neiger, Axios reported on November 7.
Officials from the two countries told the news website that Mexican security services foiled the plot earlier this year. They claim that the Quds Force, the foreign operation branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), began planning the assassination last year.
According to Axios, the plot was led by an operative from the Quds Force’s Unit 11000, who spent years at Iran’s embassy in Venezuela recruiting Iranian agents from across Latin America.
“The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat,” a US official tells AFP on condition of anonymity.
Commenting on the news, Israel Foreign Ministry Spokesman Oren Marmorstein said that “the Israeli intelligence and security community will continue to work tirelessly, in full cooperation with security and intelligence agencies around the world, to thwart terror threats from Iran and its proxies against Israeli and Jewish targets worldwide.”
Last month, Israel’s Mossad spy agency accused the IRGC of orchestrating a string of recent attacks on Jewish sites in Western countries.
A statement released by the agency at the time named Sardar Ammar, a senior commander of the Quds Force, as the mastermind behind the attacks.
These recent accusations appear to be a part of a wider campaign meant to pressure Iran, or even to straight up justify a new attack on Tehran.
Involving Venezuela in the alleged Iranian plot to assassinate the Israeli ambassador to Mexico raises even more questions. For several months now, the U.S. has been escalating against the Caracas over drug trafficking accusations, with reports coming out from Washington suggesting that the ultimate goal is a regime change.
Some in the Venezuelan opposition have already begun using the country’s close relations with Iran to push for a military intervention by the U.S.
Just two days ago, Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado warned that Iran has transformed the country into its “satellite” in the hemisphere, alleging deep military, financial, and logistical penetration by Tehran.
“This is a critical issue that all Americans, all people in the Americas have to understand,” Machado said during a remote appearance at the America Business Forum in Miami. “Venezuela has been turned into the main bridgehead of the adversaries of the United States and its criminal networks and enemies that support them.”
Machado went on to claim Iranian operatives have “provided technology in drone systems,” are “building armed drones in our country,” and have used Venezuela’s financial system to launder money for Hezbollah and other groups.
“over 10,000 Venezuelan passports” were issued to facilitate movement for affiliated actors across the region and beyond, she added.
The fact that the news about the alleged plot to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in Mexico broke out just two days after these remarks, and that the claims by both sides align perfectly suggest the presence of serious coordination between the U.S., Israel and the Venezuelan opposition.
Israel stands to gain a lot from joining the U.S. ongoing campaign against Venezuela. For once, it can use this to further pressure Iran. Even more, if the regime in Caracas is overthrown, Israel could resume economic relations with the country, which was once one of the main customers of its defense industry.
