The Russian military has begun clearing the center of Kupyansk where Kiev forces are held up, all while advancing in the wider area around the key city in Kharkiv, according to reports from October 11.
The Zapad [West] Group of Forces, which currently controls most of Kupyansk’s eastern and western parts, is advancing in the center of the city from the southern direction. The move from this direction is clearly meant to fully besiege Ukrainian troops, who are currently cornered in the center, mainly along the Privokzalnaya street.
It’s worth noting that Ukraine has already reinforced blocking detachments deployed around Kupyansk and to the south of it in an attempt to force its troops to fight there to the end. Some are, however, opting to surrender.
To the east of Kupyansk, the Zapad Group of Forces is advancing towards Petropavlivka and Kucherivka. Kiev forces maintain some strong fortifications there.
The Zapad Group of Forces is also reported to be expanding its control to the south of the city, mainly in the salient between Kolisnykivka and Zahryzove. Russian troops imposed control of a large park located to the south of Zahryzove, along the Oskil River.
The recent moves to the east and south of Kupyansk, suggest preparations for a large-scale operation to expel Kiev forces from the pocket to the east of the Oskil River from Kupyansk to Zahryzove. Such an operation will likely take off before the city is secured, however.
It’s worth noting that the Russian Aerospace Forces have already stepped up its strikes on Kupyansk and the area around it to support the Zapad Group of Forces.
The group’s drone units are also intensifying their attacks, focusing on main routes around the city which Kiev forces are using to rotate troops and bring in supplies.
Despite Ukraine’s attempt to hold onto the city by pressuring its own troops to fight and pouring in more reinforcements, Kupyansk will likely be captured by the Russian military in the near future. It is unclear if Kiev is already preparing its defenses around the city, but if this is not done, a collapse will likely happen.
