Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems unveiled on October 9 the L-SPIKE 4X, a loitering munition from the Spike family of anti-tank guided missiles with special capabilities that suggest it was developed with targeted killings in mind.
In a press release, the company describes the munition as “a missile designed with loitering built in — not a UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) retrofitted with a warhead”
The munition is powered by a jet propulsion system that delivers mission flexibility. In higher-speed dash profiles L-SPIKE 4X can reach the 40 kilometer engagement envelope in five minutes. Meanwhile in loitering profiles the missile provides on-station persistence of up to 25 minutes.
The L-SPIKE 4X is designed for operation in contested electromagnetic environments and GPS-denied environments and includes hardened communications to sustain control under interference, according to Rafale.
The company also said that munitions has an autonomy and operator-support suite that emphasizes man-in-the-loop control.
It added that the architecture supports artificial intelligence functions, including automatic target recognition and target image acquisition, and enables a single operator to supervise and coordinate up to four missiles simultaneously, in one mission, while retaining human decision authority.
The L-SPIKE 4X can be launched from air, land and naval platforms originally developed for the legacy SPIKE NLOS, which is very comparable, although more anti-tank focused.
Rafael said that the munition can be equipped with two primary warhead configurations: a tandem HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) and multi-purpose.
All of these specifications suggest that the L-SPIKE 4X was especially designed for targeted killings. In fact, an introduction video released by Rafael shows an animation of the missile hitting a certain floor in a multi-story building in what looks like an assassination.
The footage brings back to mind countless assassinations from the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Syria and even Iran from the last few years, where the Israeli military and intelligence were able to hit a certain floor of a multi-story building to kill the target without causing much cultural damage.

Although the L-SPIKE 4X will be first showcased at the AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Washington, D.C. later this month, there is no doubt that the missile has been already used in the Israeli assassination campaign that has been ongoing since the outbreak of the war in Gaza more than two years ago.
The Israeli military and intelligence have for sure used other weapons which remain under wraps, but with the war winding down we could soon hear about them.
