As of October 6, the Russian military continues to pressure Kiev forces from the Dobropillia salient and the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk direction to the directions of Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye.
In the Dobropillia salient, the Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces has expanded its control in both Nykanorivka and Pankivka after repelling another wave of Ukrainian counterattacks. Russian troops also made gains near Shakhovo, advancing towards the settlement from the western direction.
Russian operations in the salient appear to be focused on clearing the two pockets held by Kiev forces, between Vladimirovka and Toretsk, as well as between Nykanorivka, Boikivka and Zatyshok. This will likely take time, as Ukrainian troops are fighting back.
Moving to the south in Pokrovsk, the Tsentr Group of Forces has reportedly captured most of the Solnechny and Shakhtyorsky districts in the center and southern parts of the key city. Ukrainian troops are clearly losing the battle for Pokrovsk. Still, Kiev does not appear to be willing to withdraw its forces to save resources.
More advance by Russian troops was also reported between Kotlyne and Udachne to the west of Pokrovsk. Any breakthrough to the north of these two settlements could sever one of the last routes leading to the city, making a withdrawal from there very difficult.
Meanwhile in Dnepropetrovsk, the Vostok [East] Group of Forces has reportedly resumed its offensive from Verbove towards Vyshneve after repelling a Ukrainian counter attack. A push by Russian troops from Stepove nearby was also reported, although no details are available.
The fall of Vyshneve could be catastrophic for Ukrainian defense lines in Zaporozhye, thus it is expected that Kiev forces will attempt to hold onto the settlement at all coasts.
In Zaporozhye, the Vostok Group of Forces is reportedly still advancing from Novoivanivka and Olhivske towards Poltavka and the settlements located to the north of it. The settlement will likely be stormed soon, but the battle there will certainly be fierce.
It’s worth noting that Ukraine has deployed some of its best units to the Dobropillia salient and Pokrovsk in recent months, weakening defenses in other directions. This is very apparent in Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye. Now, the situation became very difficult for Kiev forces in all of these directions.
Despite all of this, a Ukrainian withdrawal from Pokrovsk to reinforce other directions remains unlikely, as the smallest mistake during such a maneuver could lead to a catastrophic collapse. In effect, Kiev has trapped some of its best troops there.
