Defense Minister Israel Katz on September 19 issued a threat to Abdel-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen, following a new wave of missile and drone attacks on Israel.
In a post on X, Katz said that al-Houthi would be “sent to … the depths of hell” and that his group would lose its hold on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
“Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, your time will come. You will be sent to meet your government plenary and all the eliminated members of the axis of evil who are waiting in the depths of hell,” Katz wrote. “The slogan ‘Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews’ written on the Houthi flag will be replaced by the Israeli blue-and-white flag that will fly over the capital of a united Yemen.”
Just a day earlier, a suicide drone launched from Yemen by the Houthis struck the entrance of a hotel in the port city of Eilat in southern Israel, causing damage but no injuries.
Two more drones from Yemen were shot down over southern Israel after the attack, and later in the day, the Houthis fired a ballistic missile at Israel, which sparked sirens throughout the country’s center but was also intercepted by Israeli air defenses.
The Houthis announced that they had launched four drones at Israeli targets in Eilat and the nearby city of Be’er Sheva, in addition to a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile at a “sensitive military target” close to the city of Tel Aviv in central Israel.
“The Umm al-Rashrash [Eilat] area will continue to be a target of Yemeni armed forces operations, God willing,” Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya said in a statement, claiming responsibility for the attacks.
“Facts and developments have proven that this criminal enemy poses a threat to the region, its countries, and its peoples. Its danger is not limited to the geography of occupied Palestine, which requires everyone to shoulder their responsibility,” he added, apparently referring to Israel’s recent attack on the leadership of the Palestinian Hamas Movement in Qatar.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in Yemen have launched 87 ballistic missiles and at least 40 drones at Israel.
In late August, an Israeli attack on Sanaa killed Ahmed al-Rahawi, prime minister of the Houthi-led government, along with other ministers.
Israel intensified its attacks on Yemen this month even further, killing more than 30 journalists working in Houthi-run outlets in a single attack and later devastating the port of al-Hodeida, which is held by the group.
Katz’s threat should not be taken lightly. The threat to al-Houthi is not the most dangerous part of what he said, that would be the part about raising the “Israeli blue-and-white flag” over Sanaa in a “united Yemen”.
Israel does not have the means to invade Yemen, not even to conduct any ground operation that goes beyond the scale of a limited raid. What Katz hinted at is providing direct support to the forces of the internationally-recognized government in Yemen in an offensive against the Houthis.
Reports from earlier this year suggested that the United States have considered such a scenario, although there was no indication of any direct Israeli involvement at the time. Now, it is very possible that such an offensive could start with direct, or indirect support from Israel. This won’t be easy, however, as the Houthis are guaranteed to fight back.
