Ukraine launched another drone attack against Russian territories over the night of September 8 and 9, all while suffering more losses in several directions across the special military operations zone. The recent losses included many foreign mercenaries, which highlights the country’s every growing recruitment problem.
The overnight attack saw at least 31 drones getting intercepted by Russian air defenses, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In a statement, the ministry said that 15 drones were shot down over the Black Sea, seven over the Belgorod region, three over the Kursk region, two over the Crimean Peninsula, another two over the Krasnodar region, one each over the Tambov region and the Voronezh regions.
Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said that a fragment of a downed drone fell on a car in the city of Sochi, killing the driver. A total of six private houses were also damaged in the city.
The Russian military also continued its own long-range strike campaign on Ukraine, with the air force in Kiev reporting 84 drones launched into the country overnight.
Sixty drones were shot down or suppressed, the air force said, with the impacts of 23 drones recorded across ten locations.
Later, the Russian MoD said in its daily briefing that missile, drone and artillery strikes hit “ammunition depots, command posts and launch sites of long-range UAVs [Unmanned Aerial Vehicles] as well as temporary deployment areas of the AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] and foreign mercenaries in 140 areas” over the past 24 hours.
The ministry added that one launcher and one control cabin of a Ukrainian S-300 long-range air defense system were also “neutralized.”
On the ground, Kiev forces took more blows. Igor Kimakovsky, an adviser to the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), announced that the Russian military had taken control of the office of the Pokrovskoye coal mine, the largest coal producer in the region.
“Our units have entered the premises of the Pokrovskoye coal mine office near Udachnoye,” west of Krasnoarmeysk, Kimakovsky told TASS.
He noted that fierce battles are still taking place in this sector of the line of engagement, and Kiev has deployed reserve troops and mechanized brigades there.
In the South Donetsk direction, the Russian military is reportedly making gains near Sosnovka, Novopetrovskoye, Novonikolaevka, and moving from Zaporozhye towards Novonikolaevka.
Video footage posted to social networks also seemed to confirm that the Russian military had taken over Zarichne in Donetsk, although this is yet to be confirmed by the MoD.
Meanwhile in the direction of Sumy, fighting continued south of Yunakovka. The Russian military repelled six Ukrainian counterattacks by the morning: two near Alekseevka and four near Andreevka. Kiev forces used armored vehicles and heavy artillery, but to no avail.
According to the Russian MoD daily briefing, Kiev forces lost more than 1,485 troops in battles with Russian forces across all frontline areas over the past 24 hours.
To make up for some of these losses, especially in Donetsk, Ukraine deployed roughly two companies of Latin American mercenaries in the Krasnoarmeysk direction, TASS reported, citing Kimakovsky.
“The enemy has deployed roughly two companies of Latin American mercenaries near Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov,” Kimakovsky said, noting that the main task of these mercenaries is to counter Russian assault units.
The DPR officials also revealed that the Russian military has already destroyed almost all Spanish-speaking mercenaries who were recently deployed to the Dnepropetrovsk region.
“Following a series of airstrikes, Ukrainian forces scattered Spanish-speaking mercenaries in the villages of Velikomikhailovka and Novopetrovskoye. Airstrikes were launched on these positions, too, so now we can say that the company of foreigners which was recently deployed to the border between the DPR and the Dnepropetrovsk Region has been almost completely destroyed,” Kimakovsky said, without providing any specific numbers.
The latest developments shows how Ukraine is still prioritizing what it calls “deep strike” against Russia, all while failing to stop the advance of the Russian military. Kiev either believes that its strikes, which remain largely ineffective, will force Russia to make some concessions, or is simply using this tactic to prolong the war.
Meanwhile, the cost of attempting to stop the advance of the Russian military is growing, and attempts to make up for losses with foreign mercenaries are clearly degrading the competence of Kiev forces.

the russians are all talk and no walk. they will never be able to pass ukraine’s fortress belt and therefore will not be able to use their superior numbers and mobile forces before being crippled by the coming newest sanctions on russian oil-gas-energy and the secondary sanctions and tariffs that will be imposed on anyone who might even think about doing business with russia.
