Six people were killed on September 8 when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on vehicles and pedestrians in Jerusalem’s Ramot Junction.
The two gunmen, armed with makeshift Carlo submachine guns, arrived at the junction from the nearby Palestinian towns of al-Qubeiba and Qatanna. Once there, they quickly began firing at people waiting at a bus stop as well at a bus that had just stopped there.
Israeli Police said that the gunmen were eventually killed at the scene of the attack by an off-duty soldier and a number of civilians.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said that in addition to the six people killed, at least 12 wounded, including six seriously.
In an initial response to the deadly attack, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) surrounded al-Qubeiba and Qatanna. al-Qubeiba and Qatanna. The military also began a search for potential accomplices in the area in cooperation with police.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later visited the scene of the attack. From there, he vowed to keep fighting in the Gaza Strip.
“The fighting continues in the Gaza Strip,” Netanyahu said, stressing that Israel “will destroy Hamas as we promised and free our hostages — all of our hostages.
“Sadly, the war also continues in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria, where we have acted with great force,” he said, using the biblical term for the occupied West Bank.
The primer also vowed that such attacks would not deter Israel. “They only increase our determination to complete our missions, in Judea and Samaria too — everywhere,” he asserted.
Just a few hours before the attack in Jerusalem, Defense Minister Israel Katz posted on X: “Today, a powerful hurricane will strike in the skies of Gaza City, and the roofs of the towers of terror will shake.”
“This is the last warning to the murderers and rapists of Hamas in Gaza, and in luxury hotels abroad: Release the hostages, and put down your weapons — or Gaza will be destroyed and you will be obliterated,” the minister said.
“The IDF is continuing with its plans — and we are preparing to expand the maneuver to defeat Gaza,” he added.
Following the attack, Al-Jazzera reported that some 40 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since dawn
At least 25 people were killed in northern Gaza, 14 were killed in southern Gaza, and one fatality was reported in central Gaza.
While Gaza took the brunt of the war with more than 45,000 killed, the situation in the West Bank has not been stable. Close to 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in the occupied territories since the war broke out after the Hamas-led October 7 attack of 2023.
Israel will likely face a new wave of violence in its territories, Jerusalem and the West Bank if it goes one with plans to launch a large-scale offensive in Gaza City.
