More Israel strikes hit the Gaza Strip on September 7 in preparation for a major operation there, as United States President Donald Trump increased pressure on the Hamas Movement to accept a new ceasefire-hostage deal.
The strikes mainly targeted Gaza City in the northern part of the Strip. The upcoming Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) operation is aimed to displace all Palestinians from the city, then occupy the entirety of it.
One of the strikes hit al-Tawheed Wal Sunna mosque in Daraj neighborhood in the morning, according to Palestinian media. It is unclear if the strike resulted in any casualties. Earlier reports suggested that at least two people were killed in a strike in the same neighborhood.
Later in the afternoon, the IDF bombed a high-rise building in Gaza City after claiming that it was being used by Hamas. This was the third such building to be taken down by Israeli strikes in the last three days.
According to the military, Hamas “installed intelligence gathering means” at the al-Ru’ya building and “positioned observation posts to monitor the location of IDF troops in the area.”
The IDF said that Hamas operatives also planted many explosive devices near the building as part of preparations for the military’s offensive in Gaza City. Before the strike, the IDF issued two evacuation warnings. No casualties were reported after the strikes.
Separately, the IDF announced that a Hamas tunnel spanning hundreds of meters in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood was destroyed.
The tunnel was located during operations of the Nahal Brigade in the area, according to the military, which said that the tunnel featured a room that was used by Hamas’s forces in Zeitoun to coordinate attacks. Video footage showing the tunnel being blown up was released.
At least 52 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israel during the day, according to Al-Jazeera. The vast majority of those killed, 48, perished in attacks on Gaza City. With the new casualties, the Palestinian death toll from the war is slowly nearing 45,000.
Despite the recent Israeli escalation, Hamas and its allies continue to show willingness to fight back. In the morning, two rockets were launched from Gaza. One rocket was intercepted and the second struck an open area, according to the IDF. There were no reports of injuries. Later, the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility, saying that the target was the settlement of Netivot.
Addressing the growing IDF operations in Gaza City, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu boasted about the displacement of “100,000 people” from there, accusing Hamas of doing everything to keep people there in order to use them “as human shields.”
“We want to focus on the terrorists themselves, and allow the civilian population to get out,” said Netanyahu.
“Our effort in Gaza against the last strongholds – essentially the last important stronghold, Gaza City – is part of our effort to complete the dismantling of the Iranian axis stranglehold,” he added.
Trump seemed to back Israeli military plans, giving what he declared to be his “last warning” to Hamas to accept his terms for ending the war.
“Everyone wants the hostages HOME. Everyone wants this war to end!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“It is time for Hamas to accept [my terms] as well,” the U.S. President continued.
“I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting. This is my last warning. There will not be another one,” he added.
There are currently 48 hostages in Gaza, around 20 of whom are believed to still be alive. According to several reports, Trump wants Hamas to release all of them in exchange for ending the war. However, the group will also have to disarm and hand over control of the Strip to another body after talks with Israel.
Hamas has already shown openness to several U.S. proposals, only for Israel to hinder a new ceasefire-hostage deal. Thus, the decision to go on with the war is an Israeli decision, and in no case Hamas can make a decision that could bring the war to its end.
