Kiev forces recently found not one but two warheads among the wreckage of a Russian Geran-2 suicide drone, Ukrainian media reported on September 5.
Photos of the wreckage show two BST-52 thermobaric warheads, each weighing 50-52 kg. This is the heaviest payload documented so far on a Geran-2.
Most conventional explosives consist of a fuel-oxidizer premix, but thermobaric warheads consist only of fuel and as a result are significantly more energetic than conventional explosives of equal weight. Due to this, they are considerably more effective when used in enclosed spaces such as tunnels, buildings, and field fortifications.

The Geran-2, reportedly a version of Iran’s Shahed-136, is powered by a four-cylinder two-stroke gasoline engine. It typically has a range of up to 2,500 kilometers and can carry a warhead weighing 30-50 kg.
Earlier this year, the drone was spotted with a new multi-purpose warhead weighing 90 kg, still lighter than the new double BST-52 configuration. In both cases, the increase of the warhead weight certainly led to a reduction in the range of the drone. The specific range of both versions is unknown, but could be around half of the original range.
The Russian military shifted its approach to deploying Geran-2 drones in recent months, expanding their operational scope beyond deep strikes into more tactical frontline strikes against high-value targets like radars, air defenses and multiple rocket launchers. In this context, exchanging some of the range for more fire power makes sense.
The Geran program, which also produces the lighter pusher-propelled Geran-1, and the fast jet-powered Geran-3, is being expanded significantly. Russia could soon produce as many as 6,000 such drones a month, according to recent reports.
In the last few months, several new versions of the Geran-2 were spotted, including a loitering munition with an artificial intelligence-powered electro-optical system and a mine-laying drone.
