Video footage posted on social networks on August 25 shows a Russian interceptor drone taking down a Ukrainian FP-1 fixed-wing, long-range suicide drone, in the first such documented case.
The FP-1, developed by Ukraine’s Fire Point, is one of the largest suicide drones currently in service with Kiev forces. The drone, which is guided via GPS-aided inertial navigation system, has a range of up to 1,600 kilometers and carries a warhead weighing around 120 kilograms.
The type of interceptor used to take down the FP-1 is unknown, but its stable course of movement suggests that it is based on a fixed-wing drone.
In addition, it is clear from the footage that the interceptor utilizes a first-point of view (FPV) guidance system, built around a thermal imager and a two-way data-link that allows the operator to fly the interceptor into the aerial target on final approach. The same data-link likely provided the interceptor with course correction in the first phase of its flight.
It is unclear if the interception of the FP-1 was the result of a right time and place situation, or the result of focused efforts meant to develop interceptors for larger drones.
In any case, the successful interception shows that Russia is making serious progress when it comes to the development of interceptors.
FPV interceptor drones are a much cheaper alternative to anti-aircraft missiles. At the same time, they are easier to manufacture, maintain and operate.
