The Russian military has reportedly modified its Olan-30 reconnaissance drones to carry and deploy smaller first-person video (FPV) suicide quadcopters.
The Orlan-30, which was developed by the Saint Petersburg-based Special Technology Center on the bases of the Orlan-10, is one of the main drones currently in service with the Russian military. The drone has an operational range of 120 kilometers and an endurance of more than eight hours. It features an advanced electro-optical system with a laser designator.
A photo showing an Orlan-30 carrying two FPV quadcopters under its wings somewhere over the special military operation zone in Ukraine surfaced online on August 22. The photo was likely taken from the video feed of a Ukrainian FPV interceptor drone that was chasing the Orlan-30.
The Russian military has been experimenting with FPV drone carriers for quite some time. The Orlan-30 is the largest platform this concept has been tested on, so far.
The main aim of such carriers is to deliver the quadcopters to targets located far behind the line of sight, all while providing target accusation and data-link relay. In the case of the Orlan-30, which is equipped with an electro-optical system capable of detecting targets, the modification basically turns it into a combat drone.
It is unclear how successful this concept has been. Still, it is, without a doubt, worth exploring as it would provide a flexible, cost-effective, behind the line of sight targeting capabilities.

i just figured put a couple of fpv’s on a weather balloon and float it over kiev. than the fpv teams can hunt priority targets right in the capitol.
