For the first time ever, a warplane of the Lebanese Air Force (LAF) conducted on August 17 a patrol over Syria, specifically over the southern countryside of Homs in the center of the country. The unprecedented move came following threats to Beirut from Bedouin tribes loyal to the Islamist-led interim government in Damascus.
Data from the Flightradar24, which the patrol was spotted on, identified the warplane as an American-made A-29 Super Tucano turboprop light attack and counter-insurgency aircraft.
The patrol came exactly two days after some Bedouin tribes allied to the Syrian government gave Lebanon a “48 ultimatum” to release some 2,000 Syrian prisoners, including many Islamists who were convicted of terrorism.
A day into the unofficial ultimatum, reinforcements, including at least one Soviet-made BM-27 Uragan heavy multiple rocket launcher, were reportedly deployed by the Syrian military along the border with Lebanon, specifically in the southern Homs countryside where the patrol took place.
Last month, it was reported that Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, an Islamist himself, threatened to take diplomatic and economic action against Lebanon over the latter’s disregard of the issue of Syrian prisoners. Damascus, however, denied these claims.
Despite the fact that the LAF patrol over Homs was tracked on Flightradar24, the Lebanese military issued a statement denying any violation of Syria’s airspace.
“There is absolutely no truth to this news. Military units are monitoring the situation along the border and taking the necessary measures to control and protect it. Communication and coordination with the Syrian authorities are ongoing to monitor any developments,” the statement, posted to X, reads.
The A-29 is easy to fly and maintain, and is considered one of the cheapest warplanes to operate. Five such warplanes are currently in service with the LAF, all were donated by the United States.
Lebanese Super Tucanos are equipped with AN/AAQ-22 Star SAFIRE II day\night observation and targeting electro-optical systems. They are armed with laser-guided Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) rockets and Paveway II bombs. It is highly likely that the A-29 that conducted a patrol run over Syria was armed.
Israel wiped out the Syrian Arab Air Force and the Syrian Arab Air Defence Force following the fall of the regime of former president Bahsar al-Assad last December. This left the country with no air defenses whatsoever.
Lebanon engaged with the new government in Syria from the start, including on the military level. Still, two rounds of deadly clashes have broken out along the border of the two countries since the fall of the Assad regime, with Damascus accusing Hezbollah of violating Syrian territories.
Beirut is clearly taking the threats coming out from Syria very seriously. Damascus seems interested in building influence within Lebanon. Recent reports even suggest that Syria’s Islamist-rulers are eyeing parts of the country for annexation, possibly even under a deal with Israel.

homs province: two unidentified gunmen in the uniform of general security forces on a motorcycle opened fire on a family of civilians from the alawite community in telsarin village in tel kalakh in the western countryside of homs. the attack left a little girl dead, while her little brothers were injured.
the syrian observatory for human rights confirms that direct attacks on civilians blatantly violates the international humanitarian law.

lebanese air force ? what nation supplies this entity and directs their government ?
the “lebanese air force” hasn’t had any planes since 1976. at that time the mighty lebbo air force had 2 hawker hunter jets. one was shot down. the pilot of the other one bugged out/ chickened out and defected to cyprus, taking his plane with him. since then, the lebbo air force has been a plane-free zone apart from a few toy planes the jewsa allows it to have.
that would be funny if lebanon did a preemptive strike on the turkish/israeli proxy forces in syria.
