The Russian military has destroyed another United States-made M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launcher of Kiev forces using an Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile.
The launcher was targeted close to the settlement of Zhikhovo in the Sumy direction. Video footage of the pinpoint missile strike surfaced online on August 14.
The Iskander-M is reported to have a range of nearly 500 kilometers. The highly-maneuverable missile can be armed with different conventional warheads weighting 710-800 kg, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel-air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions.
The missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system (INS). It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
Since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the U.S. has supplied Ukraine with at least 39 HIMARS launchers. Germany pledged to buy three more launchers for Kiev forces.
These launchers are typically armed with M30/M31 series GMLRS GPS-guided rockets, which have a range of more than 70 kilometers, or MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles with a range between 165 and 300 kilometers depending on the version. Both are guided via a GPS-aided INS.
While there are no specific numbers, it is believed that most of these launchers have already been destroyed or damaged by the Russian military. The Iskander-M was responsible for most of the documented losses.
Aside from these losses, the HIMARS became way less effective in the last two years as a result of a combination of improved Russian air defenses and electronic warfare.
