Forces loyal to Syria’s Islamist-led interim government attacked Druze fighters in the southern governorate of al-Suwayda on August 8, violating a ceasefire brokered last month by the United States.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said in a report that pro-government forces attacked the town of Najran in the northern countryside of al-Suwayda from the Qarasa direction and the Duwairi agricultural road, using heavy weapons.
The forces didn’t take over the town, but the attack resulted in casualties, according to the London-based monitoring group, which didn’t elaborate.
Last month, Israel intervened to stop an attack by government forces on the Druze in al-Suwayda. Israel justifies its intervention by its historic ties to its own Druze community. The battle ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
Druze fighters maintained control over al-Suwayda city along with much of its eastern and southern countryside. However, government forces held into most of the northern and western countryside of the governorate. It has since then kept al-Suwayda under siege to “force inhabitants to comply,” according to SOHR.
The death toll from the battle continues to rise to this day. The SOHR said on August 8 that it had documented the names of 52 Druze civilians who were executed by government forces and affiliated fighters. This brought the toll of 1,620, including at least 401 executed.
The latest attack was not the first violation of the ceasefire. On August 3, similar clashes broke out in the western countryside of al-Suwayda.
The conflict is clearly not over yet. There are no real talks between the Druze and the government, which appears to be determined to subdue the governorate.
