The Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on August 3 that they had attacked three targets in Israel with suicide drones in response to the war and series on the Gaza Strip.
Two drones targeted a couple of “military targets” near the city of Tel Aviv in central Israel and the city of Ashkelon to the south, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said in a statement, adding that the third drone targeted the port of Haifa in the northern part of the country.
“Yemen will continue its support operations until the aggression stops and the siege on the Gaza Strip is lifted,” the spokesman vowed.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that one drone launched from Yemen was shot down by the Israeli Air Force near the border with Egypt, close to the settlement of Bnei Netzarim where sirens had sounded. The other two drones fell short before reaching Israel, according to the military.
The drone attack came just two days after the IDF announced the interception of a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis. The group said that the target of the attack was Ben Gurion, Israel’s largest international airport located close to Tel Aviv.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis have launched around 67 ballistic missiles and around 20 suicide drones at targets in Israel. The group also sank two ships directly linked to Israel in the Red Sea.
In an attempt to deter the Houthis, Israel carried out six waves of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen during the same period. It even tried to assassinate a senior military commander of the group in the capital, Sanaa, but to no avail.
Last month, the Houthis announced earlier in the week that they will target any ships belonging to companies that do business with Israeli ports, regardless of their nationalities, as part of what it called the fourth phase of its military operations against Israel in support of Gaza.
The IDF is meanwhile reported to be preparing a large-scale attack on Yemen, that could possibly include assassinations and ground raids.
