Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, a Ukrainian specialist in communications, electronic warfare, and radar systems, warned on August 2 that Russia could soon attack Ukraine with hundreds of drone boats.
The specialist issued the warning after Russia’s leading Rubikon advanced unmanned technology center revealed in a video released a day earlier on the anniversary of its founding that it had been working on developing such boats.
“They conducted training and worked through scenarios. They are working on improvements. The video also shows an underwater drone,” Beskrestnov said, commenting on the footage. “With this post, I am drawing attention to the emergence of a new threat. Anyone who knows what Rubicon is understands that this is serious.”
According to Beskrestnov, Rubikon could soon carry out attacks with up to 400 drone boats on ports, towers, ships, and other maritime infrastructure in Ukraine.
“They can even launch the boats directly onto the shore, loaded with fragmentation munitions,” Beskrestnov said.
The Russian Navy tested multiple types of drone boats, including ones designed to carry out one-way or suicide missions, during the recent July Storm exercise. Some of the footage shared by Rubikon were in fact taken during the exercise, which indicate cooperation between the center and the navy.
Russia began developing drone boats with the start of the special military operation and used several examples of such systems later on. However, it is yet to produce or deploy such systems on a mass scale. Now, things are apparently about to change.
