The Russian military has destroyed a SKYctrl counter-drone system deployed by Kiev forces in the Chernihiv region using a Lancet loitering munition.
The pickup-mounted system was targeted close to the settlement of Mashevo, some 20 kilometers away from the border with Russia. Video footage of the strike indicates that the system was completely destroyed after getting directly hit by the Lancet.
SKYctrl was developed by Poland’s Advanced Protection Systems. It is unclear when exactly the system was supplied to Ukraine.
The system, which integrates an optical tracker, a radar and jammers, can supposedly detect, track, and eliminate hostile drones with a range of up to ten kilometers. It also employs machine learning algorithms to differentiate between non-threatening aerial targets, such as birds, and drones.
In this case, however, SKYctrl apparently failed to detect, track or eliminate the Lancet loitering munition that ended up destroying it.
The Lancet was developed by the ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern. The company produces two versions of the loitering munition, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighting three kilograms.
The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.
Ukrainian attempts to stop Lancet loitering munitions with air defense fire, electronic warfare or counter-measures have so far been mostly unsuccessful.
According to Lostarmour.info, a website that documents military losses, Lancet strikes have destroyed or damaged 164 radar and electronic warfare, intelligence and communication systems of Kiev forces since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine more than three years ago.
