The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced late on July 25 that air defenses intercepted another ballistic missile that was launched from Yemen by the Houthis.
Sirens sounded in several settlements in the southern West Bank and settlements near the Dead Sea in southern Israel amid the attack. No casualties or damage was reported.
This was the second attack from Yemen to be reported during the day. In the early morning, the Israeli Air Force intercepted a suicide drone that was launched from the country at Israel. The IDF said that no sirens sounded “according to protocol.”
The Houthis have not yet claimed responsibility for either recent attacks on Israel, but the group usually does so within 24 hours.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis have launched around 65 ballistic missiles and 17 suicide drones at Israel. The vast majority of the projectiles were intercepted or fell short. Still, the attacks caused panic and disturbed flights to Israel.
Israel carried out during the same period six waves of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. However, the group was not deterred.
Channel 14 reported on July 23 that the IDF was preparing a major, broad-based operation against the Houthis in Yemen, on a scale of its recent attack on Iran, and with the aim of neutralizing the Houthi threat for an extended period.
According to the report, the preparations for the operation will still take some time, but that as soon as the green light is given from the government, the IDF will try and neutralize what Defense Minister Katz called one of Israel’s “primary” fronts, the other one being Gaza.
The Houthis are guaranteed to respond to an attack of such a magnitude. The shape and size of their response can’t be predicated, however.
