Late on July 18, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced that they had carried out another missile attack against Israel in response to the war on the Gaza Strip.
Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said in a statement that the group launched a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile at Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel.
“The operation successfully achieved its goal, thanks to God, and sent herds of millions of usurping Zionists to flee to shelters, halting airport operations,” the spokesman added, vowing that the Houthis will continue to attack Israel “until the aggression on Gaza stops and the siege [on the Strip] is lifted.”
The Palestine-2 is a two-stage solid-fueled hypersonic missile that appears to be derivative from Iran’s first hypersonic missile Fattah-1. It has a range of over 2,150 kilometers and a top speed equivalent to 16 times the speed of sound, according to the Houthis.
Sirens had sounded in numerous towns across central Israel and the Jerusalem area amid the attack. Later, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that the missile launched by Houthis from Yemen was intercepted by air defenses. No casualties or damage was reported. However, operations at Ben Gurion were indeed disturbed by the attack.
This was the Houthi’s second attack on Israel in around 48 hours. On July 16, the group launched a Zulfiqar ballistic missile at Ben Gurion and four unidentified suicide drones at Ben Gurion, as well as at targets in the area of Negev and the port of Eilat in southern Israel.
The Zulfiqar is a single stage liquid-propellant missile with a detachable warhead. It is thought to be an improved copy of the Iranian-made Rezvan with a range of over 2,000 kilometers.
At the time of the attack, the IDF announced the interception of a Houthi missile, but didn’t mention anything about the drones.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis have launched around 62 ballistic missiles and 15 suicide drones at Israel. The vast majority of the projectiles were intercepted or fell short. Still, the attacks still disturbed flights to Israel.
In response, Israel carried out during the same period six waves of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. However, the group was not deterred.
