A Russian pinpoint rocket strike has reportedly killed or wounded dozens of Ukrainian troops as they were being rotated at a position near the settlement of Shostka in the Sumy direction.
It is unclear when exactly the strike took place, but video footage was posted to social networks on July 16. The footage purported to show two precision-guided artillery rockets, most likely from the 9М542-series, fired from a Tornado-S multiple launch system hitting the Ukrainian military position.
According to Russian media, the strike left some 50 Ukrainian troops killed or wounded and destroyed five military vehicles.
The Tornado-S is a deeply upgraded version of the Soviet-era BM-30 Smerch 300 mm multiple rocket launch system. 9М542-series rockets are guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system and have a maximum range of up to 120 kilometers.
These guided rockets are typically armed with a cluster munitions warhead or a high-explosive fragmentation warhead.
Last March, the Russian military completed the liberation of the Kursk region and brought the battle against Kiev forces to Sumy.
Kiev forces took heavy human and material losses in Sumy in the recent weeks as the Russian military stepped up its strikes on all sorts of military targets in this direction using precision-guided weapons, like the Tornado-S.
