The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) detected a rocket launch from southern Syria toward the Golan Heights late on July 10, Hebrew media reports.
According to i24NEWS, the rocket was likely launched from the vicinity of the town of Tasil in the western countryside of the governorate of Daraa. The rocket did not cross the border, however. The news channel said that the IDF believes the launch was carried out by a local terrorist cell operating in the area.
This was the second time a rocket attack was launched from Syria against Israel since the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad last year.
The first attack, which took place on June 3, saw two rockets impacting the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights after being launched from the outskirts of Tasil. The attack didn’t cause any casualties or damage. Still, the IDF responded with a series of strikes on military sites in southern Syria.
It’s worth noting that the IDF took over the buffer zone adjacent to the Golan Heights just hours after the fall of the Assad regime on December 8. It has since established a series of strategic posts there.
The latest rocket fire came following a series of raids by the IDF in the governorate of al-Qunitra, adjacent to Daraa, during which at least six people, including two minors, were arrested. The military alleged that two of the raids targeted cells operating on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Responding to these allegations, Deputy Governor of Quneitra, Mohammed al-Saeed, denied in an interview with the Anadolu Agency on July 11 the presence of any force linked to Iran or Lebanon’s Hezbollah in southern Syria.
“Israel claims the presence of Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian forces to justify its attacks on residential areas in Quneitra,” the local official said, adding that the region is now under the control of the government’s security forces.
The tensions on the Golan front come amid reports of major advance in talks between Israel and Syria’s Islamist-led Interim Government, with a peace deal being within reach. Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa is said to have agreed to give the country’s claim to the Golan Heights, or at least two third of the region. Nevertheless, Damascus wants to regain control over the buffer zone.

informed sources confirmed, on friday, that nine international organizations concerned with human rights have begun documenting kidnapping crimes against alawite women in a number of syrian cities during the past months.
