Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, warned on April 4 that Russian soon have the ability to launch upwards of 1,000 Geran-type suicide drones a day.
Russia produces three versions of the Geran, which are alleged to be copies of the Iranian-made Shahed-131, 136 and 238 suicide drones.
“Under the pressure of the enemy’s increasing mass use of the Shahed — cheap but capable of reaching anywhere — with modifications we cannot predict in real time, there will be 1,000 units per day or more. I’m not trying to scare anyone. This is based on intelligence analysis,” Madyar was quoted by Ukrainian media as saying.
The commander added that to counter such attacks, Ukraine would need to relocate drone production facilities within the country.
The Geran-1 and 2 are both pusher-propelled. The first has a range of 900 kilometers with a warhead weighing 15 kg, while the second has a range of 2,500 kilometers with a warhead weighing 50 kg. Meanwhile, the Geran-3, which is propelled by a turbojet engine, has a range of 2,500 kilometers and a warhead weighing 90 kg.
All three versions of the Geran are guided via the same GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system with anti-jamming capabilities.
Loitering munition versions of the Geran with terminal electro-optical homing, including one with an artificial intelligence model, are reported to be at least in development.
In recent months, the Russian military shifted its approach to deploying Geran drones, expanding their operational scope beyond deep strikes into more tactical frontline engagements. This change reflects a serious increase in production capacity.
Ukraine’s exhausted air defenses are already failing to deal with the daily Geran attacks. A further increase of production could cause unbelievable problems for Kiev.
