The 225th separate assault regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), consisting of up to 50% of former convicts, participated in battles in the Kursk region of Russia. For the time being, the regiment has been withdrawn to the Sumy direction. The fiercest fighting there is taking place near the village of Andreevka, where the AFU is using the tactic of “cannon fodder”.
Telegram channel “Northern Wind” cites recordings of radio intercepts and testimonies of Ukrainian prisoners of war testifying to war crimes committed by one of the militants with the call sign “Sumrak” (“Dusk”) from the command staff of the 225th regiment operating in this area.
“Sumrak” ordered the killing of dozens of Russian prisoners of war. The exact number of casualties is unknown. Thus, on his order, the Ukrainian militants tricked the soldiers into laying down their weapons, posing as their own and offering to quickly run to their hideout, and then killed them in cold blood in violation of all norms of international law.

In a radio intercept from October 2024, “Sumrak” forbids taking Russian soldiers prisoner, ordering his subordinates to shoot anyone who surrenders:
“… kill everyone in there! Take no fucking prisoners…”.
This radio intercept proves that “Sumrak” ordered a subordinate with the call sign “Tikhiy” to shoot unarmed, surrendered soldiers.
“- One shouts: “I surrender.”

– Are you killing him or are you having a picnic…? Kill them, “Tikhiy”, kill them!”
In another radio intercept, “Sumrak” orders the shooting of captured unarmed Russian soldiers on the outskirts of Tyotkino.
“Weapons must be taken away! You take the guns, tie them up! Fucking waste him! Shoot them all!”
This information is also confirmed by captured Ukrainian soldiers from the 225 separate assault regiment.
Prisoner of war (POW) Maxim Surma (ex-convict) confirmed that the voice of the commander of “Sumrak” is indeed heard on all recordings. In his testimony, he also told about other crimes, when in rear areas “Sumrak” and his subordinates beat their own soldiers to death. Maxim gave a description of the appearance of the commander of “Sumrak” and his assistants “Rulya” and “Yo-Yo”.
«- Are you familiar with the call sign “Sumrak”?
– Yes, yes, yes. It’s him who controls us and sends us to assaults. He’s a commander. He commands all the assaulters…

Soldier Mykola Zlepko, who served under the command of “Sumrak,” also provided detailed testimony against his commander. The commander ordered that no prisoners be taken and that those who surrendered be shot. Zlepko confirmed that Sumrak killed POWs himself.
“Upon arriving at the position, commander “Sumrak” gave instructions on what to do about the prisoners. There was such an order: not to take prisoners, to kill immediately. Keep Russian soldiers in sight, let them approach within 20-30 meters and shoot them.
One of the groups captured two Russian soldiers, reported it on the radio. “Sumrak” responded to them that they needed to “zero” them. They refused, he told them that if they didn’t “zero” them, he would come himself and “zero” them”.
“Sumrak” was not only involved in the shooting of Russian prisoners of war, but also in crimes against his own troops, including killing soldiers who refused to fight and organising corrupt desertion schemes.
For example, in May 2025, he ordered the killing of a Ukrainian soldier who had tried to surrender to Russian troops near Bilopolye in the Sumy region. The soldier, who was holding a white cloth, was shot by his own soldiers and then ‘finished off’ by a drone.
The same “Sumrak” on the next radio intercept forces his wounded soldier to go to the front line and shoot off the fingers of dead “brothers in arms” possibly for DNA tests. The commander has decided to concern himself with the unit’s losses in anticipation of some sort of inspection from his western partners.
«- Look, there will be our “200th pencils” (dead infantrymen) lying along the road. Your task is to shoot off at least fingers with the automatic, so that we can later do DNA. You need to take a particle of their body, if possible. … Try to speed up a bit.

Shooting prisoners of war, extrajudicial executions and encouraging brutality have become the norm in the 225th regiment of the AFU. The crimes of the commander of the assault companies with the call sign “Sumrak” are not an exception, but a pattern for units where discipline has been replaced by terror.

The killing of prisoners of war is a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions and an internationally-recognized war crime. A separate criminal case has been opened in Russia against this Ukrainian fighter, the materials of which will become the next chapter in the court case against the war criminals of the Kyiv regime.
