Iran launched a large barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel on June 20 afternoon, in the 17th such strike since the start of the Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program exactly a week earlier.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that at least 25 missiles were launched during the strike, without specifying how many were intercepted.
At least one missile struck the northern city of Haifa. Other impacts were reported in central and southern Israel. In the southern city of Beersheba, heavy damage was reported as a result of multiple impacts, apparently caused by a single missile armed with a cluster warhead.
Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service said that the impact in Haifa wounded 23 people, three of them seriously. The service also reported that a woman collapsed and died after suffering a heart attack while sheltering in the northern city of Karmiel during the missile strike.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced later that the 17th wave of its retaliatory attack, codenamed Operation True Promise 3, targeted bases, military industries, command and control centers, and “the evil designs of the Zionist regime.”
Footage released by Iranian media showed the launch of multiple medium-range ballistic missiles from the Ghadr and Emad series, although it is unclear if the footage were related to the latest strike or previous ones.
A single missile launched from Iran in the morning hit Beersheba, causing significant damage to the Negev Advanced Technologies Park, also known as Gav-Yam Negev. Seven people were wounded. The IDF said later that it foiled a larger attack on the city by destroying three launchers in Iran.
According to the IDF, Iran has launched more than 450 ballistic missiles and 1,000 suicide drones since the start of the Israeli attack on its nuclear program, codenamed Operation Rising Lion on June 13. The attacks claimed the lives of 25 people and left more than 500 others wounded in Israel.
Iran’s retaliatory attacks are becoming more and more effective, possibly as a result of adopting new tactics to overcome Israel’s exhausted air defense network.
