Strikes Overview: Kyiv Sacrifices Cities for Propaganda

With the escalation in the Middle East, Kyiv was left behind the MSM headlines and Zelensky lost the necessary Western attention to continue begging for money and weapons from his patrons. That’s why the war in Ukraine is seeing another rung on the escalation ladder provoked by the Ukrainian military. The night of June 17th was marked by one of the most massive exchange of strikes with civilian casualties on the both sides, which miraculously were avoided in recent attacks.

The night’s hostilities began with a brazen Ukrainian attempt to overwhelm Russian air defenses. Waves of fixed-wing drones streaked across the border, targeting regions deep inside the Russian Federation all night long.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported intercepting and destroying 227 Ukrainian UAVs from the evening of June 16th to the midday of June 17th. They targeted 12 Russian regions near the border and deeper in the rear. The sheer scale and timing of the attack suggested a deliberate effort to provoke Moscow into a disproportionate response—one that could be exploited for international media attention.

Yet, despite Kyiv’s efforts, Russian air defenses held firm, neutralizing the threat before most drones could reach critical infrastructure. No major damage has been reported so far. This failed provocation, however, set the stage for what would come next, a relentless Russian counterstrike aimed at further crippling Ukraine’s military capabilities.

The massive wave of Russian drones and missiles was not long to wait. Russian forces launched one of the most concentrated aerial assaults of the war, employing a mix of kamikaze, decoy drones, Kalibr cruise missiles, Kh-type long-range missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic weapons, and guided aviation rockets. As Russian missiles and drones began striking Ukrainian targets, Kyiv’s military command scrambled to control the narrative.

Of course, Ukrainian officials claimed an astonishing 428 intercepted aerial threats, including:

  • 402 UAVs,
  • 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles,
  • 8 Kh-59/69 guided missiles,
  • 1 anti-radar Kh-31P missile,
  • and even 2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles..

Yet these claims rang hollow as explosions tore through military depots, industrial sites, and energy facilities across the country. Ukrainian cities were caught on fire, confirming that overwhelmed Ukrainian air defenses failed.

The Russian military humbly concluded: “The goal of the strikes has been achieved. All designated objects are affected.”

Last night, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carried out a group strike with high-precision air, land and sea-based weapons, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles, against objects of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine in the Kiev region and Zaporizhia.

The disconnect between Ukraine’s boasts of successful interceptions and the reality of widespread destruction highlighted a grim truth: Kyiv’s air defenses were simply outmatched. Rather than admitting vulnerability, Ukrainian authorities instead framed the strikes as indiscriminate Russian aggression, omitting the fact that their own drone raids had triggered the escalation.

According to preliminary reports, the areas affected in Ukraine included:

  • Kyiv and Kyiv region (Bila Tserkva, Vishneve, Bucha, Vyshhorod, Boryspil, Irpin)
  • Odessa and Odessa region (port infrastructure, energy facilities)
  • Kharkiv region (military logistics hubs)
  • Sumy region (industrial sites in Konotop and Shostka)
  • Dnipropetrovsk region (Kryvyi Rih, Synelnykove)
  • Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kirovograd, Vinnytsia, Poltava and Zhytomyr regions (military depots and other facilities)
  • Zaporozhie, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions (Ukrainian troop concentrations, military depots)

The attack began in the early evening of June 16th with Geran-2 drones and glide bombs striking eastern regions, including Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions. A fire broke out at an industrial facility in Shostka (Sumy region), while military positions near Synelnykove (Dnipropetrovsk region) were destroyed. In the evening, strikes on the Ukrainian military were also recorded near Prilyki (Chernihiv region), Lybni (Kharkiv region), Zaporozhie, Kherson and all around the Sumy region.

As the night deepened, the skies over Ukraine’s capital turned into a battleground. Russian forces, having shifted tactics to concentrated strikes on one of Ukrainian cities rather than dispersed attacks, unleashed a relentless barrage on Kyiv. According to the local authorities, strikes were recorded in at least 27 areas in the city, with the local mayor claiming in total 175 UAVs and 16 missiles targeting the capital.

The first explosions shook the city shortly after midnight, with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles slamming into military-industrial sites.

The Kyiv Radio Plant, long suspected of aiding Ukraine’s war effort, erupted in flames, sending plumes of smoke over the skyline.

Multiple strikes pounded military and energy infrastructure, causing widespread blackouts in the Darnytskyi, Podilskyi, and Svyatoshyn districts. Reports indicated that repair teams were unable to access some areas due to ongoing attacks.

Ukrainian air defenses, already strained, struggled to cope. Reports emerged of a critical air defense system near Zhuliany Airport being destroyed early in the attack, leaving large portions of the city exposed. A series of explosions also rocked the Borispil airfield, where a large ammo depot and missile systems were destroyed. Civilians took to social media, describing a night of terror as missile rain with heavy damage in residential areas.

The air defense of Ukraine does not stop intercepting targets over heads of civilians, in an attempt to cause more damage to the civilian infrastructure. Missiles of Ukrainian air defense are confirmed to often strike directly into civilian houses, mistakenly or not. The horrific footage of civilian casualties and destroyed infrastructure is then used by Kyiv to beg for more aid from the West.

Ukrainian officials claimed 14 fatalities, including a U.S. citizen, though details of the casualties remained unclear, supposing the foreign military instructors could be eliminated. Unverified reports suggested one strike may have targeted a high-level security forces gathering, potentially eliminating key personnel.

The footage confirms that the damage to civilian building was not caused by Russian cruise or hypersonic missile, nor a kamikaze UAV, but by a less powerful warhead:

Beyond the capital, Russian strikes hammered Odessa’s port facilities. The city of Odessa faced a concentrated drone assault, with at least 25 UAVs reportedly targeting port facilities and fuel depots.

In Kharkiv and Sumy, explosions rocked industrial zones, while Kherson and Mykolaiv faced missile attacks targeting troop concentrations. And so on…

As Russia’s strikes subsided, Ukraine delivered its own brutal attack—not against military targets, but against civilians. In the early hours of June 17th, U.S.-supplied HIMARS rockets slammed into a residential building in Donetsk’s Leninsky District, killing at least five people and wounding ten more.

The attack, targeting a purely civilian area, underscored Kyiv’s willingness to sacrifice innocent lives for propaganda value, hoping to divert attention from its faltering battlefield position and gain back highlights in the MSM.

Kyiv sought to trigger massive Russian strikes to deliberately attack civilians both in its own capital and in the lost Donetsk city in order to generate graphic footage of destruction for Western audiences. With Zelensky absent from Ukraine traveling abroad during the escalation, the strikes were timed to coincide with a broader information campaign aimed at securing additional military aid. As the conflict drags on, Kyiv’s willingness to sacrifice its own people for propaganda gains becomes increasingly evident: a desperate terrorist tactic used for years that only deepens Ukraine’s tragedy. With Western aid dwindling and military prospects dimming, the Ukrainian leadership led by foreign warmongers appears willing to provoke bloodshed, stage terrorist attacks on its own civilians, and manipulate media narratives to maintain the illusion of resilience.
