Russia Is Winning Drone Race Against Ukraine - Reports

Russia is winning the drone race against Ukraine by producing more and better unmanned systems, The Times reported on May 23

According to the British newspaper, a new generation of Russian FPV suicide drones guided via fiber optic cables have reshaped the front line and the tactics of warfare.

“The changes posed by drones are so fast that concepts we implemented just a month ago no longer work now,” the newspaper quoted a Ukrainian infantry battalion commander as saying.

Over the past week alone, the unnamed commander stressed, Russian drone strike ranges have increased by four kilometers.

A separate report from The Washington Post, also released on May 23, said that FPV suicide drones with fiber optic cables played a key role in the defeat of Kiev forces in the Russian region of Kursk. The range of the latest versions of these jam-resistant drones have reached close to 20 kilometers, according to the newspaper.

The same report also revealed that the Ukrianians were struggling to produce comparable FPV drones in sufficient numbers.

Julian Röpcke, a journalist with BILD, claimed recently on the X social network that the Russian military was using close to 1,000 “state-of-the-art” FPV drones every day, and speculated that the number will likely rise to 2,000 in coming months. Röpcke also noted that 150 larger, fixed-wing suicide drones of the Geran-1, 2 and 3 types were being used daily by Russia. Citing Ukrainian analysts, he speculated that the number could reach 500 in a year.

The effect of Russia’s superior FPV drones was not only felt in Kursk, but also on the front near the settlement of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk direction. There, Kiv forces are reportedly struggling to protect their remaining supply routes due to repeated drone attacks.

The Kiev regime received hundreds of billions in support from its allies in the West and elsewhere, yet it is failing to catch up to Russia when it comes to drones.

This situation will not likely change, as Ukraine appears to be heading to a complete defeat. Aside from losing the drone race, the regime continues to suffer from shortages on all level, including in human resources.
